Sex and the rental market
I have two apartments available for rent 9/1. One is a studio and the other a one bedroom, both in central Denver in a desirable neighborhood. Our market is typically single people 19-35. I placed an ad on Craigslist on Monday giving the locations and stating that I would be showing each one twice yesterday. I showed the apartments to approximately 30 people. 27 women, 3 men. Of the 3 men, one was the husband of a woman looking at the apt and another was looking for his sister. So, in reality, I showed them to 29 females and 1 male.
I'm pretty sure the ratio of males to females in Denver is not 29 to 1. Yesterday was not an anomaly. The sex ratio of respondents to our ads (which are always placed early in the month) is consistently skewed in favor of females. What's the explanation? |
Normal males don't hang out on Craig's list? The only involvement I have had with Craigslist is on behalf of a client who's wife was soliciting a lover. Looking into it, apparently it is very common and a lot of states are about to take action:rolleyes: Just seems like it attracts deviants.

yes, i am an on-site apt manager in los angeles, and have had the same experience from craigslist. lots of strange women and, yes, strange gay men.
(for the record, many of my friends are, yes, women and gay men. they're just not freaks. i think the original bay area thing, where it go started? was a different vibe?) i use an on-line listing agency now. boring repsonders, but thats what we like for tenants:D (btw, the pompous ass thinks you mean "gender"?):D |
Yeah, I thought the thread title was alluding to something a little more steamy.

Yeah, like trading sex for the security deposit.. :D

Kerry- The only thing I can think of is college age or the fact that men will share apts or houses more that women will. |

Nothing strange about the people that responded apart from the skewed ratio.
Around here, Craigslist has all but put classified ads in newspapers out of business. Everyone advertises there for everything. I'm been using Craigslist exclusively for about 3 or 4 years now. Nothing intentional about the ambiguity in the thread title.;) |
Women are more hip that guys (want to live downtown) ....if you were renting an apartment in Centennial, you'd ring the dinner bell at a sausage fest. :P

Damn, I thought you were going to say they were having sex in your rental apt and you got vid. Another letdown.

I think women tend to be a bit pickier with where they live than men. I remember when apartment shopping with my girlfriend, I was happy with the first one we went to. She dragged me on to see an additional 20 others.

if the real estate market there is anything like los angeles, probably don't want to sell. rental rates, tho, are heading towards the moon.

yeah... I apartment hopped for 5 years. I never used craigslist. I would drive the neighborhoods i wanted to live in. and when i saw a place i liked i called and then moved in.
craigslist gives you the option to be a bit more picky about the place but not the neighborhoods. Personally i would rather live in a dump in a nice part of town then a nice place in a more risky part of town. but being a guy i'm not hung up on where i live. the last place i rented was a house with Garrett and his lady. she did all the shopping. she wanted to. and i don't care, and nether did Garrett. so she did it all. I think that women just like to shop more. |
