wow

hey, i just read your message. i am from richmond and the other day i pulled into a parking spot and a woman said to me:

"how dare you drive the same car as Hitler's staff car!"

i was literally in shock and responded

"how can you say that to me when you don't even know me?"

and she walked off in a huff. anyways. here is my car, im afraid it is nowhere near looking like one of hitler's staff cars, but some must think so. and even if i did have one of hitler's staff cars, i still think they are beautiful. maybe a bit erie, but i wouldn't complain!

cheers
eric

Eric, I completely forgot about this thread. Obviously the person I ran into and the one you commented to you, have learned their hatred. It is really hard to believe in this day and age, some 56 years after WWII, that there are still people what harbor ill feelings about German cars. How old was this person who made the comment?

my car has been dubbed the panzer tank by all my friends. It has been called hitler on several occasions, and it pisses me off as well. SOme people just can't recognize a well built car I guess....

the type of people that would call it a hitler car, probably don't know anything about mercedes, its history, and about quality engineering.

The people that stereotype like that, could likely also have other stereo types, things like all new yorkers are *******s, all blondes are dumb, etc etc etc.

That type of attitude, makes me wonder if they have any brains or any actual proof to back up those statements.

I know what I have said may sound like stereotyping, and it probably is, but I prefer to call it my opinion on people who want nothing more than to put someone down to make themselves feel better.

My older brother used to put me down all the time. it gave me some serious confidence issues that I am still overcoming. But in all fairness, he did it because he was insecure about himself. but now the tables are the other way around. He is very secure withhimself and very level headed, while I still have issues to work out...

"I wonder what that guy thinks about Ford, GM and especially Chrysler, sending UAW jobs out to Mexico and Canada. Camaro/Firebirds are made in Canada. PT Cruisers and Neons are made in Mexico. Also, I believe Ford Windstars are made in Canada as well."

To clarify this, consider that since 1968, canada and u.s. have a trade agreement, the "auto-pact" specifiying that the number of cars built in canada would equal the number of cars sold in canada. this is not an unreasoble agreement, in fact it might even sound fair given the money being made here and considering it virtually guaranteed that a domestic (i.e, canadian) car industry would never develop.

Such neighbours! It is not enough that you shut down the pulp and paper industry in B.C., jail our citizens for selling refridgerators to Cuba and accidentally kill 4 of our light infantry boys while the state department bombs us with euphemisms for avoidable tragic deaths. A little appreciation would be nice; beleive me, canada poses no threat to the u.s., so dont worry about it.

The level of ignorance that some people achieve never fails to astound me.

Daimler/Benz were building cars well before Hitler came into power and, like many other industries in Germany at the time, he forced them to serve his purposes. I would say to that person, "Stop to think what the penalty would have been if they had not! Do you think they had any choice in the matter?"

Regardless, Mercedes engineering was ground-breaking and top-notch before Hitler's reign, they survived the Nazi era, and the war, and their engineering has been ground-breaking and top-notch ever since.

The idea of blaming Mercedes for Hitler's racist and inhuman actions could only come from a very historically uneducated, willfully ignorant, naive and simple-minded person. That is the same kind of person who tends to harbor racism and hate in the first place. The person that said that is a "walking, talking contradiction!!" Does the opinion such a person has of our fine automobiles matter? I think not.

Right after I got my MB, I changed the fuel filter. The new one came in a box that said, "Made in Israel". I thought that was ironic but at the same time thought , wow!, what does this say about the world community? My ending opinion was that it was pretty cool. After all, I am the next generation removed from WWII. I don't hold anybody responsible for what a relative or ancestor did. We Southerners are proud of our heritage, but no one can justify slavery. It was another time back then and I didn't have anything to do with it. The people that did are dead and God has judged them. HE has not asked my advise and I haven't offered it. What most people don't understand is that people around the world profit from international commerce, not just the country of origin. If Jews are ok with making MB filters, then that's good enough for me!

refer to larry bible's story about the mb with the bullet star
in it. you may have seen he car that was referred to in a book i read recently about 'easy company'.seems when they captured the car they wanted to test if the windows were really bulletproof and thus you 'bullet star' in the window. maybe that's the car you saw!?

heres a propaganda photo, circa nov 1927 at Nuremburg. Most of the thugs standing here with hitler would later be killed by that pyschopath. the car itself was an MB tourer capable of reaching 100mph; note the star has been partially obscured; unknown if this was intentional

Cars that give you the creeps....

I don't think the "brand" of car matters much, but at the Blackhawk Museum is a vehicle said to be Stalin's limo. I defy anyone to look at that car without getting a little ill. Objects do create feelings by association - but different for different folks. I have owned German, Italian, English, Japanese, and American cars. Now, I consider them all as coming from the same place. Rolls, Bentley, and Chrysler might be considered German now, Volvo American, etc, etc.
