smallest passenger vehicle in US with 8 forward facing seats?

In the soccer mom and extended family world, I find that a vehicle that seats 8 would suit us nicely. What are the economical alternatives in passenger vehicles available in the US with 8 forward facing seats? I'm looking for economincal commuting - not something for long trips, hauling or towing.

Obvious mpg choice is among new cars is a Sienna or Odyssey. Don't know why Dodge doesn't offer an 8 seater Caravan. An 8 seater Mazda5 or Rondo would be nice. The Flex is appealing since I'm not keen on the ride height of SUVs but Ford only offers seating for 6 or 7. The Acadia and clones fit the capacity bill but...

What are the choices in older vehicles besides a LWB W123? Pass on full-size wagons and Marathons :) Can 8 squeeze into a Multipla?

You're not likely to escape from a minivan as your choice, particularly if those eight passengers need to carry more than a lunchbag as cargo. One problem with relatively small vehicles with third row seats is that the rear row of seats become the defacto rear bumper in the event of a rear-ender.

I recently sold my 74 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon. It sat 8 facing forward nicely. Not very fuel efficient though.

The checkers came with Chebby engines. I sometimes imagine my self driving one with a 6.2 diesel conversion. Actually a 617 turbo would do well too in one I think.

VW Vanagon maybe? Yeah I know, heard all the stories about engine leaks....
not a problem if you know what your doing.

Average mpg 16 to 21. Built between 1980 and 1991.... best model was 1988 up and not the Syncro. Westies are expensive to buy.

Top of range had a/c, electric mirrors, power windows, power steering and good winter heater.

Bus version fits most garages.

They made a few vans with diesels too.
