Thinking of buying a 92 Lexus SC400

I need some time to work on the Benz and not drive it every day....I also wanna keep the miles down on it.
My Dad's friend has a 1992 Lexus SC400 (4L V8) which has a damaged rear bumper, but is otherwise in reasonably nice condition.

140,000 miles.....

He is asking $1,500 for it. I figure worst case scenario I fix the bumper and flip it for like $2,500 or something.

What do ya guys think? My dad's getting some pictures later today of the damage so I can see how good/bad it is.

I'd say jump on it. $1,500 is cheap.

Ya but the rear bumper is damaged from a crash....I have not seen the car yet -- This is just what my dad has told me. He told me that it "looks" repairable with a heat gun although it will need to be painted again....

It sounds pretty quick too. 250HP 0-60 in 6.5s

Yeah, buy it. Worst case scenario you sell it for more than you paid.

Looks like there are quite the array of performance products available for the car too!

CAI, Headers, Superchargers....Looks like a fun project car! I mean stock is 250HP and they say with the bolt on superchargers can hit 400HP pretty easy without any other mods.

Seems hard to go wrong with a $1,500 Lexus.

The Lexus V8 is a reliable motor, and the SC styling has proven to hold up well. They still look contemporary. Many cars sold in 1992 look like they were sold in 1992.

The Lexus SC looks like it could've made this year.

^ Looks like the lights need replacing too -- getting yellow.

Needs cleaning up but that's the extent of the damage.
You can see the rear wing was torn off but he has the wing.

Wow...

That's quite the good price!

I would:
  • Repair trunk lid
  • Repair bumper (that's not a huge tear.. shouldn't be expensive)
  • Respray the trunk lid & bumper
  • Polish out the headlights (look around.. Griot's Garage and other sell polishing kits)
  • Either enjoy the car, or sell it for a good chunk of $

All that stuff that the car needs is simple stuff....

The paint and lights just use a mild polishing compound, and it will shine like new.
