All of the important suggestions have been stated...my iPod for solo work and a partner when possible. Either work for me as long as I don't take a break from the routine. Wanting results, as alluded to, is extremely important.

He could just set up an area where he can play some music he downloaded or even 'youtube' and dance to it by himself. Since a song is about 3 minutes he would be motivated to finish the 3 minutes. He can also use a couple 5 lb dumbells while dancing, but if he has a partner, he'll have to be careful he doesn't hit her in the head. lol. I find it works better if I have to click on each song rather than letting a bunch play, otherwise I'll just end up listenenig to the music and forgetting the dancing exercise.

Yup. Exercise machines don't get a lot of use. Better to go to a gym where you won't have the damn thing in the way.

Swimming would be the best to save the knees.

The absolute best full body exercise is rowing. The best machines are the air tubine flywheel type but they are pricey. A good piston type rower is far less expensive and will offer a superb workout that can be gradually tailored to the growing capabilities if the user. As with any exercise it must be combined with dietary discipline.

FIRST: for those who are new to exercise, get a full physical exam including a cardiac assessment.

I think we can squeak it in as a freebie since the wife can do it herself. We do owe him a few favors.

Just found out that he does toke and we suspect he gets the munchies. Guess he will have to give that up too.

We had exercise equipment in the house (weights, universal, stationary bike) that almost never got used. It's hard to get into that frame of mind repeatedly at home. Going to a gym or fitness center makes it somehow different and easier. However its said that the gym should be no more than 12 minutes away. Otherwise you stop going there as well.

Get him a bike, start riding the trails in your area. There are tons of great rides in your area. Then get him a pair of skis for the winter.

Maybe a bike won't be as boring as a cycle machine where you cycle all day and go nowheres. He works 2nd shift so he should have plenty of time to go in the am or night. You talking of downhill or cross country? We do go downhill every now and then with him, weather permitting.

Kuan 08-12-2008 11:35 AM

Cross country, that burns calories.

Seriously, the biking is great in your neck of the woods.
