I'm not sure too many other cars could withstand that kind of abuse. To me, it's a testament to the ruggedness of the W124 kombi. I'm very comfortable hauling around my 'precious cargo' in this car.

As relative newcomers to the fine state of CT, we're wondering just how badly we're gonna get screwed in the next few months. Neither the darling wife nor I have ever dealt with property taxes on cars before (well, CA technically does, but it is peanut level on older cars, and its buried in your registration fees).

Newest of our cars is a 97 (a Miata - other two Miatas are 92 and 94). Gustav is a 72 - which I seem to be remembering as more or less the vintage of your wagon. Gretel is a 91. We paid less than $12k for all 5 of 'em combined - if the state starts coming in with silly arse assessments it's gonna be tough to just sit back and take it (especially since we're in Waterbury - which has one of the highest mil rates in the state).

With 5 cars, we're afraid this is gonna hurt. Your $6k assessment - what year wagon is that on? Swamp, what are your (and our) options for protesting the assessment?
The wagon is an '80 and far from worth $6K no matter how you figure it. There is a process for appeal but I don't know what that is yet. I generally wait until the last day they're due, grab the envelopes and head up to the assessor's office to pay (more for cash flow reasons than anything else). Most people would have noticed that $6K months ago when they opened their envelopes. Had I known earlier I would have gone through the process of reassessment then, I don't know if there's anything I can do after the fact but I will look into it.

My '00 Jeep Wrangler was assessed at $7K and my '03 Odyssey at $11.5K (which seemed low to me so it's probably a wash). I believe there is some savings if I register it as "Early American" (our only choice here for antique/vintage cars ) and have been going to do that for over a year now, so I will get on that.

Welcome to CT where people even move to Taxachusetts for tax relief.

If you buy mine for $8,000, I will personally deliver to CT. (I'm serious)

Its a great wagon, everything works minus the cruise control and power antenna. Great overall condition, vintage AMG wheels, real leather interior.

Can you tell I'm not that eager to sell it? Hell, I'd drive it to Cali for 8k.

Not sure where it stands but it doesn't look good for you. Unless it fails mechanical inspection, they have accepted an offer. If it fails today, I will let you know what is wrong.
