I'm shocked. Rarely do people who obtain power through a coup just walk away.

He wouldn't but he is well aware of what happened to his predecessors.

Do you really think hell's going to break loose? It certainly seems that faith in the government is real if he can be forced out as opposed to just becoming a dictator.

This could be pretty bad. Waiting to replace his power base are a bunch of religious kooks, who if not complicit in his ouster are not saddened by it. For his flaws, known and unknown, Musharraf pushed his country to reach a lower-intensity relationship with India, began standing-up to the fanatics in the ISI & military and actively pursuing control of the the tribal region.
Will he survive? I doubt it. Unlike India, Pakistan hasn't figured out how to do a peaceful transfer of power nor how to deal with civilians who are not clerics who are increasingly demanding constitutional democracy. In Pakistan they find it a tidier transition of power if they kill the previous strongman. I think this is going to push Pakistan into violent civil unrest. A danger for the whole world but especially and immanently for India. B |

Reason for getting rid ofhim #1 "Musharraf pushed his country to reach a lower-intensity relationship with India" Reason for getting rid of him #2 "...began standing-up to the fanatics in the ISI & military " Reason for getting rid of him #3 "...actively pursuing control of the the tribal region." Who is really behind this mess? ISI, the military and their 'friends' in the Taliban/AlQueda. Remember that the Taliban is a creation of the Paki ISI... The Pakistani ISI does not want a stable and well governed country next door in Afghanistan. They much prefer a weak war torn neighbor with no ability to assert itself on the region. This is a very bad thing to have happened. I also agree that Musharraf is not long for this world and that there will be major reprecussions from this.

The big problem is the power vacuum. Maybe that Supreme Court judge who was so popular will run. It's too early to say the radicals will overrun the country though.
