No Delorean for me
t was a 1981, grey interior, 5 speed, dark grey wheels(incorrect for the vin) and a sub 5k VIN car( it was a high 4000 VIN). My bank denied my loan, my friend couldn't help me because he was, ironicly just let go from his job that day, and my other friends mom had a mental fit. Sure, I'm holding $1500 in my hands right now, and all I needed was $3500 for the complete car. Heck, the torsion bar is worth $1k and the hood alone could bring in close to $1500 with the right buyer. But I was not interested in parting out a Delorean, especially this one.
This car was mint, forward of the engine compartment, frikn mint! only 20k on the odometer( the angle drive could have broken at some point though). No frame rust, no dings, no dents, no scratches. The interior was complete, just not all put together. The only stainless panel that would need replacing or work was the right rear quarter panel. It was destroyed in the accident and replaced with a panel off the "Fast and the Furious" Delorean that we all make fun of on DMCTalk.com. So, there you have it, I almost lived the dream but the dream escaped me. It is not my time yet and the right car has not found me. It shall be said, When the time comes, I will know. Chalk this up to my first one that got away from me, probably many more to come and go before I find one. I want to say my $280 that went to the Delorean Owners Association was a waste of money, but I do have an almost complete set of Delorean World magazines now that I can read over and learn torsion bar adjustments and oil changes and door adjustments before I even get my car. "Live the Dream" now I have to drive the stupid mercedes... my blog http://www.bttfblog.com/ |
TheDon- Use the money for a good laptop.....there will be many many more Delorean's in your life just not right now. I'm sorry.
|
I already bought the stupid laptop that prevented me from buying the car... damn piece of crap sony viao had to die at the wrong time...

the plan was to buy it and store it in my uncles barn until I would have been ready to work on it. $3500 for a good rolling chasis is like a deal in the delorean community... $3500 will probably buy you a complete fuel system and some small interior bits ... the stainless body panels are worth $10k in the current condition.... uhhhggghhhhhhh.. I'm going to flip through my somewhat complete collection of Delorean World magazines and then go to Target to buy some magazine holders for them all... |

What's the significance of a sub 5k VIN?

the lower the vin the better for the most part. Plus it has the hood with the grooves in it but no gas flap. I would rather have a 2000 series or a 1000 series VIN just for the grooved hood with the gas flap and the ability to say " my vin is lower than yours" but once you dip into the 900's and such things get weird. Lowest VIN is 500 which was supposedly the first car., 501 has gone missing, 502 I have sat in and is the rare factory twin turbo car. but even before those you have some pilot cars, which pilot 25 is the closest to production car pilot they made. Prototype 1 aka Proto1 was the car JZD drove to press releases and dealerships to drum up interests. That was the car we were supposed to get but instead got what we see today. I havent sat in that one since its previous owner, DMC-FL, sold it. But he kept the original tires and some other spare parts. The rear tires on it are like 265's! back onto the VIN's eagle-co94 has 16336, which in actuallity is VIN 11336, weird, yes( we found it on the drivers side door when we removed the headliner panel to look for "cave art". It was because it was made after the first closing of the plant and dmc bumped up the vins for the 83 year.... |
Yeah all the cars in the D world are referred to by the last 5 or 4 of it's VIN. I almost had #6078, an 81, many years ago ;) I'll pick one up someday.
You saw 502? cool! I have a pic of it somewhere from the Tennessee meet I played at. Just checked an early attempt at a website of mine when I was 14 or 15- it's still up! http://www.twinturbodeloreans.8m.com/ |
which car is that?
I need to upload the pics from the DMC open house that was on saturday. There was a car with 501 miles, 100% original guaranteed concourse car. IIRC its a 700 series we used it to poke and prod to find how access some bolts and stuff while it was on the lift the whole time |
oh well looks like the image got blocked, so I removed it. that was 6078.
|
6078, any idea where that ... no... wait
nvm I found 6801 the other night while James and I were dropping off the trailer he rented. Its for sale ;) |
You're lucky you didn't get it. They are cool to look at but overrated and weak in the power department.
|
Yea, not a whole lot of power...they are cool, but I think I would get bored with it. I think they are collector cars more than anything.
