Do NOT buy a vomit comet (street patrol unit) or one of the dog units (K9) with the louvers on the hood. The stink on those will NEVER go away

Instead go for one with the Street Appearance Option: either in a non metallic pastel color, or a nice metallic, that have full wheel covers, chrome grille, all body trim, and can't be mistaken for a police issue Crown Vic

Most were issued to Police Captains, watch commanders, detectives, inspectors, investigators, and also to the FBI, Secret Service protection units, and some other government agencies, and they never saw high mileage, extended idling, or high speed pursuit use and most are retired after just a few years, and 50-70k on the clock

They are the gems, and highly sought after and very very hard to find, but they ARE out there.

Leads on locating the SAP (street appearance package) ones can be found on www.Crownvic.net

Or, you could go to look at any used Mercury Grand Marquis, and there are plenty of them off lease, or as rental returns (Rent one for a day and see what you think ) and a couple of years old one with the premium LX package with leather seats can be found without much trouble. Six thousand dollars should net you one 6 or 7 years old

With the decent comfort, safety, longevity and aility to run hundreds of thousands of miles without big repairs their value in terms to run for dollars per mile simply cant be beat. Police departments and taxi owners know this very well.
I actually like the crown vic and was looking at getting an interceptor. I just dont want to be hassled by the cops because I want an all black one with black wheels. My 88 crwon vic got better gas mileage and had better A/C than the 420sel.

If you get an Interceptor, just be sure to pry off the "Police Interceptor" badge on the back. It's generally against the law to drive around in a private vehicle with the word "police" inscribed on the exterior, even if it's just a factory nameplate.

What upsets the Police are "wannabes" and "Whackers" that pick up used interceptors at auctions and tart them up with radios, antennae, Rhino go-bars (push bars) and refit red lights into the spotlights and try and get wigwag lights from the Gall's Police catalogue and misrepresent them selves as LEOs; They HATE these guys, as they believe they are sometimes at worst, child molesters, robbers and kidnappers using "fake" Police cars, or at best academy dropouts, and overblown self important private security guards

A discreet Police Interceptor badge that came on the car and is left on, will not bother them

SAP (Street appearance package) Crown Vic interceptors do not come with the badge, at all from the factory, and the Mercury Grand Marquis has never been available with the Police Interceptor package.

Jim's right, of course. Of course he could have made his point with a less-hysterically capitalized caption...

I agree a W140 S320 would be a great car......its likely going to be the next car I buy when I can afford one..... Unless I really have $$, then I'd probably look at a used Cdi.....

Yes. I have the skinny on a 95 or a 97 S320 owned by my girlfriend's boss. Dealer serviced since new. I just would like a v8.
