When did Red China become "China"?

A serious question, I was discussing China with a friend of mine and he asked what the difference was between Red China and China.

gotta admit he stumped me.

When did the Republic of China (ROC) become Taiwan or better yet "Chinese Taipei"

I check some maps and atlas references . . couldn't find a "Red China"

Mainland China has been China since long long before we were the United States. They went red in 1949. ROC, Taiwan, or "Chinese Taipei" <-new one on me, is where the anti-communists fled when the commies took over. The anti-communists established their own national government there. I'm a little hazy on the further particulars, but I think the U.S. recognized the ROC as the legitimate Chinese government and didn't have normal relations with "red" China for quite some time after 1949.

We were talking about the olympics and how China is now just China while it was referred to as Red China when were were younger.

So far as San Francisco's Chinatown is concerned, it never did become Communist China, ever.

The Tiawanese flag, flown by Chiang Kai-Shek leader of the Kuomintang (the "KMT" party) to this day, still flies proudly over the buildings there even though CHiang and the KMT were driven off the mainland of China back in 1949 by Mao Tse Tung and his band of Communists, and the KMT then set up shop on the island of Taiwan, where your umbrella was made.

Just like the red and yellow flag of South Vietnam flies over little Vietnam (City of Westminster, in Orange County California to this day, even thought that country was lost to the communists on April 30, 1975)

Exactly. It was after 1972 when we first started dealing with 'Red China' or the PRC. We then hung the ROC (Taiwan) out to dry even though they have become a vibrant multi-party democracy (the KMT has not been in power for years now)

The ROC was the legitimate government of all of China from 1911 to 1949.

"Chinese Taipei" is the new Politically Correct way to refer to the island ot Taiwan as it implcitly implies that it is a part of mainland China and that the government in Taipei is really just a provincial administraton and not a separate nation.

If Taiwan is allowed to participate in these Olympic games, you will see them under that name and without their national flag. However I do not think they were either allowed to participate or attended if they were.

Probably around 10 years or so when current leader Hu Jintao made his famous "It is glorious to make money" comment. I don't remember the exact wording of the quote, but that is more or less the genesis for China becoming the hybrid between capitalist economy and totalitarian government that you have now.

I'm 39 and I've never called it Red China. Does that help?

Red China is just a way of saying that it is communist. its never been an official name. its like saying Castro's Cuba or something like that. I think it stems from the close ties the US had with China before the 1949 revolution and horrible problems China caused after becoming communist.

The same generation that fought along side China as part of the Flying Tigers, fought China in Korea.

Saying Red China is a way of politely saying "back stabbing Chines communist bastards", and leaving the name China open for the the good people who don't deny basic human rights on a daily basis.

The name China has a lot of respect around the world, they are the oldest civilization and they are the biggest country in the world. its really sad to think that their government is one of the worst in the world. the people of China deserve better.
