dialysis
Just got home from the hospital last wednesday and according to the nephrologist there, dialysis is in my near future. My kidneys are working at somewhere around 12-15% now and they sent me home on more than double the amount of lasics i was taking before, plus two more meds, one is a pll and the other one is a foul tasting drink i have to drink 4 shot glasses of each day.
The GOOD news is i finally found a dr. that's taking my pain management seriously, so now i have MS Contin i take once a day along with hydrocodone as a back-up pain reliever. That part is wonderful because now, for once in my life i am not feeling ANY pain. I also can't drive but i don't care.:D Anyone else here on dialysis and care to share your stories? |
My late father was on dialysis, at the end of his life it was almost twice weekly. Also he had to go for Lasics through ivy. Dialysis is no good, however there are natural meds out there that are effective in halting further kidney damage and prevent the need for frequent dialysis. I have been a diabetic since I was 31 and till today due to the natural meds I take both my kidneys fire at more than 90%.

I really feel for you,Mate.
With me it's primarily the kidneys, what with the Porphyria I have, wacky, byzantine illness that it is. Aortic aneurism and atrial fibrillation don't help as well so next time you are bewailing your fate think of how worse off some others are:D Codeine is a wondrous thing, never underestimate the power of drugs, they exist for a reason. |
Bill, I'm sorry to hear that.

That's a real bummer, Bill.
How long can you stay on dialysis? Is a kidney transplant an option for you? |
Folks live for a long time on dialysis. Decades. Its not the easiest thing but it beats the alternative.
Sorry to hear of it but glad you have found the meds to ease the pain. Tom W |
Sorry to hear that Bill.
I don't have any experience other than my grandmother has been do it once a week for going on 7 years now. She's into her 80's now and for the most part doing pretty well (she has a host of other health issues that give her good and bad days), she's still more energetic and able to do more now than 10 years ago. |
Bill- Thanks for sharing this with us and I am glad you have a doctor who takes your pain management seriously.
I had a good friend of mine who was on dialysis for many years and daily she would hook herself up and do it. |
I'm sorry that you have had so many health problems, Bill. I hope that your new doctor will be more helpful than the ones you were seeing previously.

Folks I am almost looking forward to dialysis now because i know i will feel a whole lot beter when all of this water weight is gone from my body. I feel like i am swimming in my own skin. I gained over 40 lbs. in less than two weeks. My blood pressure shot WAY up too.
I will have to go three times a week and no, no transplants. I don't think they do transplants for people with diabetes. I am pretty sure they want healthy people to get transplants, not people that would pretty much ruin a kidney the minute it went into their body. I am starting to get some other diabetic symptoms as well like floaters in the eyes, and for some reason, double vision. I was out playing with one of the dogs yesterday and she came walking towards me and i said to her aww Patches who's your friend LOL. I've suddenly got lots of time on my hands because I am not working at all (I had been maintaning a part-time work from hme situation up until last week) so I will be around here alot more often.:D |
