The Italian Stallion was trucked away today.
I spotted a Lotus elan +2 on ebay in Michigan.
Am I crazy to consider one? It supposedly runs and so forth but is right hand drive and very cosmetically challenged. Tom W

British engineering is an oxymoron, and Lotus expert is synonymous with British engineering.

I drove one once about 30 years ago. Lotus Europa. Hell of a lot of fun to drive, but probably a real PITA to keep running.

Yeah pretty much.
British cars tend to suck you in because they are usualy very sexy looking, and fantastic to drive when sorted. I have yet to drive a well sorted British car that I didn't enjoy. If you want engineering buy German.

Depending on how much you want to spend, hold out for an Elise (with a Toyota engine), or just buy a Miata.

Tom, get a grip on yourself. Becoming hooked on crack would offer a happier ending.

Things happen a lot slower though! The lotus would be for autocrossing, so a lot of the niggling things not working wouldn't matter too much. Tom W

It's not a bad looking car, though, not as attractive as the drop top... If I was looking for an Elan, I think it would have to be the convertable.

I say go for it, if the price is right. I have often lusted after Lotii. I almost bought a wrecked Europa when I was younger and stupid(er). There has to be a lot of support out there for these cars, as there is for Triumphs and MGs. Heck- they are just made up of off-the-shelf British parts anyway.

Tom,
Don't let the fiberglass body allow you to forget about the metal bits underneath that can rust. Evaluate the frame carefully. |
