Political Party Patriotism

Summed up quite nicely on "The Daily Show" last night discussing Michelle Obama's feelings for America:

She’s got to [prove her patriotism]! She’s a Democrat. She must prove she loves America, as opposed to Republicans who everyone knows love America. They just hate half the people living in it.

Yup, this is BS. You don't have to be proud of everything your country does to be patriotic. I'd leave it at that.

Very true........I find immigrants as opposed to natural born citizens doing this far more, probably over compensating or because its expected for them to do so or some of them are being overtly thankful. Patriotism comes from one's action and from within inside. You can be living elsewhere but will show your true affinity when the occasion calls for it without doing the whole act of flag waving etc. Action rather than symbolism represents the true patriot. I know many who would fly the flag and sing the star spangled banner but when true duty would call, they would be the first to evade.

She's just very defensive because of the radical church they belong(ed?) to (and defended) for all those years!

Why does she have to talk about her patriotism...? Weird...? Yea!

you should never have to talk about your patriotism. you show it. I don't care if you hate John McCains politics you know hes a patriot, no question.

A while back my friend asked me what i thought about Bill Clinton becoming the the secretary general of the UN (hypothetical in Political Science class). and I told him, hes a patriotic American. I wouldn't vote for him, but compared to someone from any other country. I would like to have Clinton in that position.

You can bring patriotism to politics. but politics cannot make you patriotic. I never questioned Kerrys patriotism, that was the guys who served with him. and i give them that right, as they were there.

The whole reason Michell Obama must defend her patriotism is because she said when her husband got the nomination locked in that it was the first time she was proud of America.

I don't understand how you can say that. how can you not be proud of America because we defeated the the British, or when we abolished slavery, or when we defeated fascism; or if you hate war, how about when we landed a man on the moon. that was pretty impressive, you think she could have been proud of that.

That is the portion of the speech everyone hones in on and criticizes.

However, Michelle wished she had elaborated on that statement when interviewed recently and said that she was proud of the fact that for the first time in history, the people of this country could be unified enough to nominate a Black candidate for the office.

Ya gotta admit, that's never happened before...and I certainly never thought I would see it happen in my lifetime!

I really don't find it that impressive because I don't really place that much importance on race.

Maybe its because I'm young and grew up watching strong black men on TV but I don't see it being that revolutionary. a man on the moon, thats history, a black president, thats just not that impressive.

you could say that its impressive because black Americans are stereotypically poor. but Andrew Carnegie went from rags to riches. so thats not new. not to mention the fact that Obama grew up in Hawaii. not exactly like growing up poor in the getto.

It was never easy for me. I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sittin' on the porch with my family, singin' and dancin' down in Mississippi.

Yes, how did you ever know that we're all fabulously wealthy here . . . how else to afford the real estate, food and gasoline prices.

The adults in his life did manage to send him to one of the most expensive private high schools in Honolulu, so they weren't sharecroppers on a plantation.

She said it was the first time she was really proud of America, i.e. very proud. That's quite different from saying she was never proud before this.

Personally, I've never been big into patriotism. When taken too far it can lead to arrogance and aggression toward anyone who's different. Some patriotism is OK IMO, but it should be moderate.

Our new neighbor across the street has flags hanging in her doorway and a vertical banner flag by her mailbox. She has little soldier statues all over the yard and occasionally hangs a "God Bless America" poster in her window. She's also an incredibly odd person. She's super republican and patriotic....funny part is, she drives a Kia! I'll never get that one....

Oh, and she's constantly in her front yard and wanders around our street and her yard wearing one of those radio earphone things, like ALL the time.

This:

Are these typical behaviors of patriotic Republicans?

Patriotism is such BS, just another tool for politicians.

I've been there myself and that's pure desperation. Challenge her on it. If it's not desperation then you might have some fun with her as she tries to justify it.
