The bitter end of a Valiant dog

Sad day here, I had to put my dog down. "Princess Mia" was 5 yr female American Bulldog, and a magnifecent animal, perfect with any child, loyal to our pack, and a very good home protection K-9. My neighbor has a small terrier, that for th last 6 mo had been aggressive ,and biting my dog thru the fence. Terriers owner was proud that his small dog was "protecting himself" against the big brute bulldog. I bought a muzzle for my dog,and she wore it whenever she was outside. Yesterday I was out front and heard a commotion in the back and ran back there, only to see the gate that separates our homes torn off the hinges, and Mia biting his dog. My grandaughter had let Mia out . My dog came off when she heard my command. The vet stitched his dog up and thankfully he will be ok. But the man could not veiw this as a dog fight and called in to animal control, who informed me that they would get a court order if nessacary to have my dog destroyed. I chose to do it myself. I want to educate owners of large breeds. In a court of law even if your dog was not the aggressor, and fights with a smaller dog-the big dog loses. If your dog has issues with another dog-keep them separated-lock your doors if small children are present. I only hope that nobody ever has to take a perfectly good dog to the death chambor, and try to calm them as they push that needle in. I honestly feel Mia could smell the death that was imminent for her, I will never forget the fear in her eyes as she looked at me and faithfully sat as her master commanded her to do. A true soldier until the bitter end.

Very sorry to hear this. Personally, I would have taken this to court before taking such drastic action.

Having had to do that to our two Lab's some years back I know exactly what you mean. I think that it might have been an opportune to suggest to the owner of the terrier that you intended having a court order brought against his dog to have it put down.

450-due to the restrictions in my community ,fighting this would be a lost cause. They are trying to make this breed extinct. pj- or at least force the owner of the terrier to watch the execution.

My former dogs breeder just had a litter, and he is giving me first choice on a pup,and is waiving the fee due to the circumstances. So,this is not a lose -lose situation for me. And I will be moving from this location in awhile, but not until the neighbor gets to see the new pup start to grow.

You poor Sport, you have my sympathy and vicarious but sincere grief....

Years ago I had a Short-Haired pointer,Goddam great hunting dog, intuitive and completely connected to me and the gun.

Damned fool would escape and kill cats, squirrels and other smaller furry critters AND bring them home to show me. The end came when he attacked and gutted and neighbor's bichon frise,or some damn oddball dog.

The owner was a media mogul and threatened all manner of legal reprisals, but apart from that I had to do the right thing as this dog only got worse with age.

It broke my heart when I shot him,I still consider myself a murderer, but some of us are faced with tough choices, nobody ever said life was a bed of roses.

That is horrible. I own a large (105 pounds) Akita, who is very sweet tempered but, like all Akitas, is fierce when it comes to protecting the pack and the family's territory. I hate to think what would happen if an intruder entered our home or tried to harm one of us.

The odds were stacked against you and Mia, but I would have offered you my legal services for free if it would have helped to teach your small-minded neighbor a big lesson.

BTW, this is one very good reason for documenting everything, including reports to the local police. Your case would have been stronger if you had documented evidence of the aggressive nature of your neighbor's dog.

Sorry about your loss.

There is a gate to the neighbors yard? I would remove that to prevent this happening again. There is so much breed discrimination that I believe you are correct that it would be a losing battle. Bulldogs used to be the All American Dog 100 years ago. At the shelter where I worked we got little terriers all the time that were surrendered for behavior. Just about all of them were pretty bad dogs. Any dog with miniature in the name is trouble. On the other hand most of the Pit Bulls were fine. If your neighbors dog torments your new dog I would address that proactively. Complain to animal control every chance you get a videotape it. Then you will have something to show the jury if anything ever happens like the little POS crawls under the fence or something. IMHO. I am very sorry for your loss.
