Wallet Advice

I am frustrated at finding a good wallet. I bought a cheap leather wallet about 3 months ago, and the thing started falling apart about a month ago. I found a hand made, hand stitched leather wallet, and it is $58, it is one of these: http://www.hippoproducts.com/cgi/hippo/cart.cgi?action=link&product=10&uid=82 . I have seen these in person, and they are top notched, and I actually met the craftsman who makes them, and showed me his personal wallet he made like 15 years ago, and still looks like new.

Now for the part where I need the advice, I have been thinking I can try and make my own. I have leather working tools laying around somewhere. The only problem is finding a good source of the high quality leather. So I am debating if I want to spend the money and just buy one, or try and source out the leather myself, and attempt to build one...

I bought my last two at Sears...I think they were Buxton brand. They have one style that I like - a bi-fold, tall wallet. It uses up the entire pocket - but, because it has a larger area, you're not sitting on a lump like you do with a skinny bi-fold, or tri-fold.
I've worn out three or four credit cards, and my driver's license (cracks/abrasions) and the wallet is still good.
Most wallets have one weak point - those plastic sleeves that you are supposed to put a business card or pictures into. (the plastic in my last two has held up better than average - not sure if it is product improvement, or just something that comes with the larger design that I prefer).

Good Luck!

I usualy get a tri fold from Macy's for about $15, my currant one is 5 years old and I'm kind of just starting to think about replacing it in the next 5 years.

$60 for a wallet? Thats a bit much.

I kept my wallet in my side pocket so I don't sit on it, maybe that helps?

My old wallet I got around 1993 or 1994, I used it until 1997, got a wallet as a graduation gift, that one wore out in 1999, went back to this other wallet, got another wallet in about 2000, that wore out in about 2002, went back to the original wallet, and have been using it for the most part until the inside of it fell apart too much, that I couldn't use it.

My current wallet's leather is starting to wear through

Just make sure and embroider "Bad MotherF**ker" on it.

'Course if you do build it yourself, you might go to a local Tandy Leather if'n you have one. I don't, used to, but not anymore. But when I did, they sold some really nice stuff. Or sometimes cowboy stores have hides and pieces. And then you can use high quality stitchery, that German thread?? that supposedly it's just top notch. Basically, you have more options doing it yourself. Believe it or not, the ebay even has some pretty good sales for leather hides. I got some lambskin a while ago. At $58, you probably won't save anything, especially if you line it, but it'll be your own.

I make my own duct tape wallets. They last about 6 months and I make a new one. A roll of Black, a roll of Chrome duct tape and a few acetate sheets for the license window will make a load of wallets cheap.

Ahhhh the Duct Tape Wallet a favorite of the true working man. Durable, comfortable (it conforms the cheeks quite nicely) and the theft proof mechanism (sticks just alittle) to ward off would be thieves.

So true ... and they're very thin compared to leather wallets.

My wife got me a Coach wallet. Great quality!

I have the black "Legacy Slim Billfold Wallet". It doesn't make a lump in my pocket.

Sigh. All my wallets are "thin", unfortunately. Maybe if I folded those singles before I put them in?
