Thumbs up Excellent fuel station story!!

So today I happened to be at a fuel station with my dad (we were on errands and stopped for cheap diesel)....he had a return line leak, so I went under the hood to do a quick fix (cut off a bit and push it on)...so I am proceeding to do so when I see gas come pouring out from under a brand new GMC Envoy in the next slot over. The guy gets out of the thing, swears up a storm, puts the pump nozzle back, gets under it, begins swearing even more, gets on the phone and yells "My fuel filler pipe broke off the tank and is laying on my axle!!! " accompanied by a colorful assortment of language....this Envoy had to be less than a year old. So, his solution? STARTS THE CAR, ROARS AWAY, AND OUT ONTO THE ROAD WITH GAS DUMPING OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE SUV!!! WOW. He left soaked pavement and a PUDDLE of gas on the ground at the pump too....as well as a trail behind his POS of a SUV.

Amazing. Are American cars really that much of a POS??? And what is wrong with people?!?!?! He could have sparked a HUGE fire!!

I really was expecting to have to flee the scene when he started the car, but thankfully no fire. Then to top it off some goth kid in a battered camaro pulls in and starts pumping his car....seemingly unaware that his rear wheel/low slung exhaust were sitting in/above a puddle of gas on the ground. The fumes were nauseating too. He must have been high already or something.

5. There has also been thought on static electricity being a ignition source in some of these fires. The Petroleum Equipment Institute in March 2002 issued a press release warning motorist to be cautious while fueling their vehicles and to follow three basic guidelines while filling up; 1) TURN OFF ENGINE. 2) DON'T SMOKE 3) NEVER RE-ENTER YOUR VEHICLE. Their web site: www.pei.org contains a link to the "STOP STATIC" campaign with useful information.
The bottom line, appears to be: It could be possible to initiate a fire while using a cellular telephone or through the discharge of static electricity while at the same time fueling one's vehicle. Is it likely to happen? Not if you follow the guidelines set out by the experts.
NOTE: The General Services Administration (GSA) has also listed Drivers Responsibilities on its web page. Included is the following statement: "DO NOT use your cellular telephone when at a gas station. Cellular phone use at gas stations or anywhere fuel is stored is hazardous. The switches and high-powered batteries in the phone can generate sparks that can set-off explosions. In one incident, a driver suffered burns and his car was severely damaged when gasoline fumes ignited an explosion while he was talking on his mobile phone near a gas pump. All electronic devices in gas stations are protected with explosive containment devices, while cell phones are not."

didn't mythbusters prove or at least show that cell phones cannot ignite a fire at a gas pump.

Yeah I happened to receive a call once while filling up once at a diesel pump that was located on the other end of the station away from the gas pumps. Some lady starts to yell at me cause I was going to blow the whole place once so I calmly said to her "One, I'm leaning on the car so I'm grounded and two, diesel fuel has no where near the volatility of gasoline, you could practically throw a match into it and it wouldn't explode" She shut up very quickly.
