Shipping to Australia-cars

Anybody know what the rules are regarding the importation of a US spec vehicle into Australia? I am sure its a big question, general info is all that is needed, like, can it be done??? (without major hassles or conversions)

thanks
Fred

It looks pretty straightforward but I saw this:

"Note: Headlights on left-hand drive vehicles must be modified to dip to the left."

I assume this means the headlights need to be re-aimed, rather than some sort of gizmo added to lower them while driving.

thanks
Fred

They may be thinking of E-code headlights, in which the "dipped", or low-beam pattern is not symmetric side-to-side.

See the section, "Compatibility with traffic directionality" in this Wikipedia article.

It probably means replacing the headlights with ones that dip to the opposite side. When Brits travel to the continent and vice versa they purchase small glue on devices to block the part of the headlight beam that would shine into the eyes of oncoming drivers when driving on the opposite side to which the headlights were designed to dip.

When I lived in Perth in the 70s I had a friend who used to come to America a couple of times a year and buy used cars. To get around the import duty he would pull out the engine and trans., put then in an oil drum, and import the car as spare parts. Once in Oz he would reassemble the car and sell it. That was nearly 40 years ago and I am sure by now the regs. have changed.
