fun stuff today

I met Wodnek from here today for lunch at the steak and shake out by the interstate. He and his lovely mrs. were on their way to the covered bridge festival. They live in southern Wisconsin and were traveling in style in their 87 300d. We had a nice time talking about mbs and such.

Then I went to my favorite machinist's sixtieth birthday bash. It was a surprise party. There was a hellofa big turnout. He has a lot of friends and a fairly big family and there must have been sixty folks there grinning and having a great time.

His brother Bob was responsible to get Homer out there for it. I asked him how he did it. He said "I told him there was a fellow out here with a 59 ford galaxie which had been in a barn for about 40 years and it was under tarp and so forth and wanted to sell it maybe pretty cheaply...."

Homer took it hook line and sinker......a barn find is just irresistable to a car crazy!

I got him a card with a picture of Hillary sitting at a desk with the sign..."president of the united states".....on it (a cartoon) and inside it said "see...there is something scarier than another birthday!".

I like Hillary but he does not.

A lovely fall day.

Now I am off to watch the end of the Purdue Ohio state game and then the nascar race from Charlotte motor speedway, and in the morning i am leaving at 6:30 am for an autocross in the parking lot of the famous Kruse auction grounds in Auburn.

Good luck at the autocross. Although I still think you should have gone with an MR2

Two things made my choice easy.

Although I like the idea very much of a mid engined car, the Miatas are much more available and parts for them are much more available as well.

This could be a transitional car for me.

Actually the car I really lust for is the Honda s2000! Sexier looks, more power...but unfortunately much much less available and much more money.

Or I could get just too darned old and have to give it up altogether.

I had a great time at the autocross today. The new h and r bar I reset to the softer setting and hookedup the rear bar again. I also ran with the spare in the car. The car was completely neutral and I found I could slide it a bit and get away with it......Yee hah!

I started with a 52.5ish run and on my sixth cut a 49.8....good for fourth only out of five but I got beat by some really experienced autocrossers who have their cars hooked up.

For next year I plan to get some 13" x 10" rims and the appropriate Hoosier tires.

For this year the only thing left to do is get an alignment....and practice.

I am still learning how hard I can drive it in the turns.

Several folks there remembered the mighty benz and said they really got a kick out of it. (one was autocrossing a 73 Saab sonnet, the other an 85 fiat x9 betrone....obviously lovers of the lost cause school of autocrossing!)

There were some pretty interesting cars there.....a tube framed AMX running (get this) street tires, and a radical tube framed mustang. Actually I think I beat both of their times.

The course was very much to my liking. I ran all day without hitting a cone. It was fairly easy to learn and not too fiddley.

It was a beautiful day. I left at 630 am and drove east watching a beautiful sun rise and on the way home I watched a lovely sunset as the full moon appeared in the east.
