Red light survay...

You have red light (traffic light) do you leave your gear in Drive or do you put it in Netural. THIS QUESTION EXCLUDES MANUAL TRANSMISSION!!!!!!

I can't imagine why anyone would put it in neutral at lights unless the car runs rough idling in park or the AC drgs it down. These are symptoms of other problems though that could be fixed...

I only do it if its an extended red light at severe traffic times, and then I'll usually turn it off.

Put it in neutral while the engine is running you've effectively stopped the Tranny fluid from being pumped through the system, bad news for the "hard"clutch disks, valve body and "soft" parts.

While I do leave it in drive, I found the banana answer far more a-peel-ing.

Carlton, the pump continues to run when the transmission is in neutral. It is simply not applying presure to any clutch paks or bands.

I'll slip it in N or P on occasion in the Saab if I have just exited the highway and hit a red light immediately. The Saab's rotors warp easily, so I figure it can't hurt to pop it out of drive and let my foot off the brake while the rotors cool a bit. Overkill, probably, but I never figured I could be hurting anything. Good discussion, though; if I'm causing transmission wear, I would rather pay a few bucks for rotors more frequently and just leave it in drive at every stoplight.

Some transmissions do use two pumps, one front and one rear. that's why you can kick start an old Chrysler product or a Benz. The rear pump will provide presure to engage the gears. I had a old '63 Plymouth that I started everyday for weeks like that.

It's not. Piss on that.

OTOH, if I am bored, I slip it into neutral, reverse, drive over and over and over. Just like sex. Giddy Up, Whoa, Back.

Hmmm, "tranny whorehouses"? Is Eddie Murphy around here?

I leave it in gear. I drive an automatic so I don't have to shift. Just lazy I guess.
