Question Do you use a home security company?

Hey Guys!

My wife and I are thinking of getting a home security company-- like Brinks Home Security or any one of several others.

If you use one, which one do you use and are you happy with them?

Yes, Great Dane Security Solutions....

On a more serious note, we have Brinks, and it works well.

Good locks and a dog of at least 75lbs is the cheapest method.

An alarm will still let the thief take off with your stuff, especially if he/she knows what they want.

A dog will take a chunk out of their @ss the moment they set foot inside (if properly trained).

ADT with the internal siren turned off. I want the thief to feel nice and secure when the cops come busting through the door!

Actually, I use them more for the fire alarm connection than the burglar alarm.

We have ADT and have been happy with it.

I recommend ADT over Brinks for many reasons:

1. ADT's door, window, and motion sensors are wireless. Brinks is all wired, so with ADT they don't have to pick up your carpet.

2. ADT works on a franchise system. The monthly monitoring fee is fixed by corporate, but the franchisees compete with each other on the cost of installation.

ADT - Get a sign for your front yard also. It will probably get you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Having ADT did for me.

I think nearly all insurance companies give you a discount on your homeowner's insurance policy, like 10%-ish, if you have a security service.

I also had ADT install a wireless smoke detector, which I thought was a great idea for two reasons:

1. it is another back-up to your regular wired and battery operated smoke detectors.

1. if no one is home, and your house catches on fire, no one is there to hear the alarm. With this unit from ADT, if their alarm goes off, they send the fire department.

Wow, five replies and yet nobody said they use Smith & Wesson. I'm amazed.

I have an alarm system on my house the PO had installed. I've never turned it on and didn't want to pay the monthy fee for it. Sometimes I think it would be a good idea, but our neighborhood is about as safe and secure a neighborhood as you'd want to find.

There are a LOT of gun owners here. I don't need to have one myself if all my neighbors have them. That's more of a deterent than the police would be.

We have a GE security system that was just updated with a newer model fire/smoke detector for the house and integrated with another system for fire/theft in the garage.

It has 30w horns pointed at all the neighbors as well as an internal siren. This system is enhanced by a black and tan Rot/Pit mix outside and by various firearms placed stratigically (and safely) around the house.

It's monitored by Consolidated Security Technologies for about $22 a month which is up from $17 before since I added cell backup in case the phone line or cable is cut. I'm happy with the monitoring. They call in seconds when they receive an alert.

The system alone cost quite a bit up front but in the long run, it's cheaper because the monthly fees are lower. I think that Brinks and such offer free or cheap ($99) install/equipment but charge higher monitoring fees. You have to crunch the numbers yourself to see what works for you.

Yeah, I was thinking of that... but that's the only thing my wife and I really disagree on. I'm all for gun ownership and believe they help keep us safe and sound. I'd also like to get one before Obama gets elected and begins to tear down our Constitutional right to own....

I live in a good area so other than some locks security really isn't much of an issue. Heck to this day my dad never locks his truck at night.

Just in case I have a clip ready to lock into gramps old Carbine for a little rock n roll. It already has three notch's on the stock so I know it works good; plenty of room to add more.

If I did go that route I'd probably take G Gordon Liddy's advise and go with a good old reliable revolver. You know it'll fire everytime when you pull the trigger.
