Angry Store cards...

I'm sure everyone is used to being asked to sign up for the store cards when you go to a big box store. I always politely say no, and thats usualy all it takes. You can tell the cashier is just asking because they have to and don't really care.

Well today I went to Dick's to get some ammo, the moron did the usual song and dance. I just said no, but then he went on, and on. Luckly he stopped because he got just to the edge of my temper and I was about to let him have it. He was like it doesn't cost anything, you must be so rich not to need free money etc.

Next time I go back there if I see him I'm going to tell him to go **** himself.

They're pushing them more because of the economy. If you use, say your AMEX at Sears, they pay a 3.5% merchants fee on the transaction vs zero transaction fee if you used a Sears card. Not like they didn't push them before but now they're pushing even more so...

A lot of places do. The nice thing is if there is a problem, Amex will go to bat for you a lot harder than the other companies or your cash payment. I have dumped the defective product on their table as per Amex and let them sort it out with Amex. I prefer to shop with credit cards because it makes returns and what not a whole lot easier.

The associates are told to push those cards...some of them get a % commission for each applicant they win over.

The marketing theory here is that if you have a store card, you are more likely to be a loyal shopper, versus a typical MC/VISA/AMEX cardholder, who can shop anywhere they choose.

They get paid a bonus called a "spiff" for each one they get. Same for extended warranties. They might get 10 or 20 bucks for selling an extended warranty. How hard would you push for 10 or 20 bucks? Pretty hard! You can even get extended warranties for "free". Just tell the sales person, OK I will pay the 79.00 if you also take 79.00 off the price. They will if they can, to get the bonus.

It happens sometimes. Take a couple months ago, there was a dispute as to whether my friendly MB dealer had given me the parts I wanted or not. They said I told them to order this when I know I ordered that. Then they wanted to charge me restocking fees. Returned the wrong items to them and told them I would take it up with Amex.
