when to use rear the fog light?

The rear fog light has it's own switch position. Under what conditions do they use/not use the rear fog light in Europe?

I use it when it's foggy out, so the people behind me might be able to spot me sooner. I mostly use it during heavy downpours, as using your Hazard flashers is illegal (although admittedly, it does make it easier to spot the car infront of you).

In fog.

wbain5280 11-08-2008 02:02 PM

Otherwise you blind the drivers behind you.

ForcedInduction 11-08-2008 03:41 PM

In America? Never.

Americans don't know what a rear foglight is. Everyone will just flash you and flip you off thinking your brake lights are stuck on or you're riding the pedal.

Mistel 11-08-2008 08:27 PM

Just last week I was following another Benz in early morning fog. They had thier fog light on. It worked remarkably well. The car would be invisible because of the fog, but the light could be seen clearly.

I use mine in fog, and when people follow too close.

Not true - we in Texas have monster rain storms in which it's very hard to see the cars in front of you on the highway. I always used my rear fog for those situations and I thought it worked very well.

people here are clueless, had a car in last week the guy was complainig that he had a brake light out, apparently he would pull out the know and turn on the rear as well, his friend was behind him and told him he had a brake light out, i though it funny that the guy did not notice the other lights coming on and that one never did.

How funny! :D

I am wondering, does the 1986-91 W126 have the rear fog lamps?

Larry Delor 11-09-2008 12:16 AM

I think the switch is there, but the light and its socket are not.

But as others posted, people do think you are riding your brakes and you have one bulb out.

I followed a Volvo one foggy morning, and the rear fog light was on...I think only other Euro-vehicle owners probably knew what it was...

Mine did. Yours probably does too.

compu_85 11-09-2008 02:26 PM

Mine didn't come prewired, but at least the lens is there in the tail light. Had to add the socket.

I use them in extreme rain or blizzard conditions, or dense fog. When I can't easily see the parking lights of the car in front of me I switch it on.

Sorry to derail the derailment but what are the rules/laws in Europe regarding use of the rear fog light? If anyone knows. I mean the fact that you can illuminate the front fog lights without the rear fog light suggests there are conditions under which you wouldn't illuminate the rear fog light.

They use it in fog only. In fact you might get a ticket if you use them when it's not foggy.

I notice this a lot here. Many drive with their fog lights on even in clear dusk, just because it looks "cool".

Ps. heavy rainfall or snow storms or a likewise reduced visiblity will be a legitimate situation to use the fog lights.

The Swede 11-09-2008 05:26 PM

My favorite rear fog (930).

What kind of fog requires only front fog lights and what kind of fog requires front and rear fog lights?

If they don't know squat about the world outside of their own surroundings, then I can't help them anyways. Let 'em complain; they're idiots.

compu_85 11-09-2008 05:45 PM

None that I know of... my VW has is the same rotatory / pull switch setup as the 'benz where the first pull is front only and the 2nd is front and rear. My 91's fog switch was not part of the light switch, but had two detentes. The first was front fogs and the 2nd was front and rear.

That's a good question. I have used those fogs lights so few times in my life, but I would say: Once it's foggy you may use both, front and rear.

I just recoup, there are 2 stages when pulling the light switch. First setting is for fronts, second setting for rear. W123, W126, W124 and older models.

If you're in foggy city traffic and at a stop light it might be better to switch the rear fog off since it's really bright and would definitely annoy the other drivers behind you.

So once you get moving again, and you know the others behind you are farther away, turn the rear fogs on.

That's what I think, and it was a good question.

iwrock 11-10-2008 03:43 AM

I always use the rear fog on the SL and the G....

My buddys got them on his new BMW, and uses them when people are on his @$$.

compu_85 11-10-2008 03:49 AM

Just remember it's as bright as a brake light. If you would be annoyed by someone in front of you having it turned on, shut yours off :)

OldPokey 11-10-2008 09:52 PM

I see too many people driving cars with fogs on all the time - front an back. It's damn annoying at night in heavy traffic.

LaRondo 11-11-2008 12:58 AM

Yeah, esp if it is some kind of 4x4 pickup/SUV driving right behind you ....

OMG, there it is! That's sooo cute ....!

I admit, I didn't see it there, but what I meant was the actual fog, that I can't see ... ;)

iwrock 11-11-2008 01:18 AM

I need more FOG LIGHT!

LaRondo 11-11-2008 01:35 AM

We don't have enough fog here in Cali for all those foglight enthusiasts ...

Move to northwestern North Carolina and you will really get use of it.;) The fog going down I-77 off of the mountains onto the plateau is wretched many times of the year. Some of the worst fog I have ever encountered was on I-77 in extreme southern VA / extreme northern NC.

Add the 210 to that list, mine has the same setup and the rear fog is very bright.

From the "Rules of the Road" (Ireland)

Use fog lights only during dense fog and falling snow. You must turn them off at all other times.

Now thats not to say that people obey that law...a lot of people drive with them on in all weathers because...they think they look cool/they have no idea they're switched on/they're just plain stupid...
It has recently been made a penalty point offence to have your fog lights on when required, which at least recognises the stupidity of driving with your fogs on, though how well it will be enforced is another matter.
It is quite strictly enforced in the UK i believe.

@ compu_85 - fog lights are actually 20 times brighter than brake lights, annoying none the less

beevly 11-11-2008 11:25 AM

At 20 times brighter than brakelamps, which I have no trouble believing judging from mine, I am leary about using the rears to warn off tailgaters. You never know who you're dealing with or how well they are armed.

Coming home from work last night, I picked up a tailgater in a big gaudy van with foglamps blazing. Fortunately, or unfortunately actually, he spent most of his time so close to me the foglamps were below my field of vision. When I had a chance to move over and let him by, he ran right up to the next car and started up with the same.

We can have all the laws we want but around here it doesn't mean a thing because it isn't enforced. Based on my driving in England & Ireland I'd say people there do a much better job of following the traffic laws. At least they are aware of them...
