need some help finding a machine shop in Houston.

I am posting this here hoping some more people might see it then where I originally posted. I have the head out of my w124 300TE and I am looking for a shop to take it to that can check for cracks and all that happy you know what, also figured I would have them check to see if it needed a bit shaved off to true the head, and give it a valve job as well.

am I missing something, are there other things I should have them check or do while they have the head.

also, I am in Houston Texas, and I have no idea where to take this into, there are Mercedes shops listed but what is the point of me driving it to an Independent just so he can turn around and take it someone else. Unless this is what most people do.

just looking for some advice.

thanks
dan

The fundamental problem with M/B heads is that there are few shops that are capable of measuring the heads to the required tolerances. If you find a shop that claims to be able to do the head, unfortunately, there is no good way to verify this.

Therefore, I'd take any claim with very serious skepticism.

I nearly had my SD head completely screwed up by a local shop. Finally decided that the $60. freight bill was well worth the cost to ship it to Metric.

You have to ask yourself a question:

Is it worth $120. additional money to be guaranteed of a quality product?

I should add that my local MB dealer sends the heads to Metric, they say its not worth fooling around with anyone else. The price is also cheap given the level of workmanship they do.

Thanks for the link, I would love to just order up the long block they are selling but than I would have to try explaining to my wife why it was necessary to buy an engine that cost more than the car.

I gotta say that the prices on the rebuilt heads are a bit higher than I was expecting, But I guess you pay for the quality of the work.

Make sure you buy exactly what you need...........no more.........no less. He usually follows the "you might as well" approach..........it adds up fa$t.
