My Benz died today

Took 'er to the scrap yard today :musicbooh.
Measly check. Steel prices are pretty down. They angled a camera hooked up to a monitor inside so I could watch it get torn apart. The claw first went and grabbed the hood and lifted. Instead of the hood tearing off, the whole car came off the ground. They turned it and shook it, then picked it up again before the hood came loose. Then they grabbed the engine. Again they lifted the whole car and had to shake and bounce it and pick it a few times until the head came off. I left after they flipped it upside down.

The TD?

C280 Sport 11-24-2008 02:55 PM

What Benz? How many miles? What was wrong?

DieselAddict 11-24-2008 02:57 PM

How much did you get for it? I once recycled an '82 Dodge sedan and the wrecker gave me $85 for it I think.

KarTek 11-24-2008 03:00 PM

You know, I would absolutely NOT want to see any vehicle I have ever owned, torn apart at the scrapper... :(

iwrock 11-24-2008 03:04 PM

I would have give you double.

tankdriver 11-24-2008 03:07 PM

Yeah, the TD.
B2 piston failure and shattered rear glass. I hated not being able to part it out.

I got $182 for it.

I wanted to see just how tough it was. Ans: Pretty damn tough. We won't be seeing any cars made that tough again.

Cruel I tell ya, just cruel.

tankdriver 11-24-2008 05:44 PM

I think I miss it as much as my dog, who died a few years ago.

kerry 11-24-2008 07:06 PM

Dammit man, that SLS pump alone was worth the price you got for it.

diametricalbenz 11-24-2008 07:32 PM

Perhaps it will be reincarnated.....

Why the hell couldn't you part it out?

Hatterasguy 11-24-2008 07:39 PM

I got a bit over $200 for my barely running 1995 Jetta. I'd be lieing if I said I didn't enjoy watching it die, my only regret is I couldn't kill it myself.:D

That abortion of a car should have been shot when it left the factory.

No place to store it while gutting it.

TylerH860 11-24-2008 11:11 PM

You could have spent an hour tops pulling a few parts and made more money than that.

Well, time has come to put my tank out of its misery. I can't pull parts, so it'll have to be a whole car deal. I'm getting rid of it because the B2 piston went bad, it's not worth paying to fix, and it's out of my comfort zone for self repair. I tried rehabbing everything else on the trans, but today it finally stopped going forward (didn't try R, my Honda was behind it).
Car is a grey 1984 300TD w/200K mi (stopped counting at ~190K, but I don't drive it much). Blue interior.
The good: It's a euro, so euro bumpers and aluminum wheels. Engine runs strong. I don't get blowby for about a week when I change the elbow on the breather hose, but it doesn't stay tight, then I get it. Seats are still in good condition (exception cargo nets), still supportive. Has the 3rd row seat, also in good condition. Water pump was recently replaced (165K). Accumulators repaired (I don't remember if they were replaced or repaired 180K. Hood is pretty rust free, only surface spots. Tailgate is pretty rust free. All I can see is a small surface rust spot behind the numbers. The rear glass broke though, so it has a plexiglass rear window. Fuel filters are new, some vacuum hoses too.
The bad: Carpets are horrible. I've hauled just about everything in or on this car. I have the worst dash in MB history (no debate). Spent time on the docks when PO brought it into the country. Quarter panels should be see through as rusted as they are. Front suspension bushings are worn.

Also, I've got a 27mm socket and some custom bent valve adjustment wrenches.
Thanks for your interest

Any other pictures desired, let me know.

I see what you mean.
I've got a '58 MGA with a torn top and a tired engine. It was given to me so I have nothing into it.Oh yeah, come to think of it the seats are torn and the paint is faded with some rust spots.

Wonder how much the scrapyard will give me for it?

Won't it be fun watching it get destroyed!

nh500sl 11-25-2008 11:33 AM

Wow, what a waste. Why not just fix the problems?

<---- Unemployed.

Also, the car was well rusted. I tried to sell as a parts car, but no bites.

Ok, now it makes more sense. I keep forgetting that cars rust most other places. You have no idea how much straight, solid sheetmetal gets turned into pancakes at my yard.

Ara T. 11-26-2008 12:51 AM

I would have looked into Pick n Pull, so at least somebody could use the parts. But i admit it would be cool seeing your car get crushed.

Thats a shame. Up here it's getting hard to find one of these old cars without rust issues.
