Mercedes-Benz phasing out V12s...

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/28/mercedes-will-begin-phasing-out-v12-engines/

They say it is because V12s do not fit in their new cars. I am thinking they would have planned for that if they wanted to keep them.

Get ready to pay $300,000 for a diesel 3 cylinder S130...
Can't wait for the carbon tax so my 300E costs $2000 extra a year to run...

The world for performance enthusiasts is coming to an end...

That's too bad. A V12 is just exquisite. You cannot match the smoothness, the immediate power anytime you want it, the maintenance costs...

Such a shame, it was a fun ride though. Nothing can beat the smoothness of a V12.

First the I6, now the V12. All the good designs are getting phased out.

I personally dont think that they are going to phase it out.

There are certain people, where there is no substitute for the V12.

AMG is still going to make 12s.

I agree with you, but it sucks that these items are just getting more and more expensive. For example, today you can get a 400HP V8 powered car for $30,000. In a few years from now, it will cost you $50,000 for a 400HP V8 powered car. All the high performance, nice cars are moving upmarket. I was hoping to be able to own a V12 powered SL one day. Now it looks like that will never happen.

A turbocharged 4 banger does not cut it for me. I guess I am the only one who feels this way nowadays. It seems like most people don't mind paying more money for less. I must be a dinosaur!

I agree with not phasing it out. I think they will even bigger motors. But who knows only time will tell. I personally liked the V12 in my 600SL. To be honest it wasn't that high of mainteance as people think.

To each his own, but I don't see why anyone over the age of about 20 would feel the need for a 400 HP car. For my taste, anything over 300 HP is a waste. Handling and ride quality are much more important than acceleration.

On the other hand, there is nothing like the smooth power of a V12. I remember driving a neighbor's V12 Jaguar sedan back in the 70s. That thing was a beauty and it only had about 280 HP.

You would be surprised how many cars with over 400bhp handle well.

The V12 in my stable has been excellent. Smoooth power, tons of torque.

While it may not be necessary to have a 400HP 12, the feeling while driving it is intoxicating. So smooth, and the sound is just something else.

Rahulio, theres nothing better than lowering the top on the SL600, and blasting away from a stop. Tires barking for traction, the rear end bucking wildly, the V12 winding up, being pinned into your seat is amazing. Just simply amazing.

While a turbo 4 banger can produce the results, it will never duplicate the feeling. Its awesome.

I agree the feeling is amazing. If you ever get the chance to own or drive any Mercedes,BMW, Ferrari anything with a V12 You will understand what iwrock and I are saying. Someday I will get myself back in one, but for now the V8 and V6 are fine.

I don't doubt that, I just don't think 400 HP is necessary for a car to be fun to drive. I grew up with MGs, which have boat anchors for engines and which are a total pleasure to drive.

Different strokes for different folks.
