Ohhh whoopieeeee My Mom the Major

My mom @ 60 years old was promoted the Major today.

She's in the Army Army too, none of that reserve or NG stuff, she does the full PT test, weapons qualifications and all of the schools people 40 years younger do.

Let that be a lesson that your never to old to pursue your dreams!

Well, tell her congratulations from the mercedesshop crew. That's great.

I always thought being in the military was handy for the status-conscious. You get to wear your status symbols on your clothes everyday.

I'll be honest; I'm shocked. 3 years to Field Grade...wow. I'm sure lots of waivers were involved.

Well, maybe. OTOH, she's not a line officer, she's a medical officer. They probably have different criteria including waiving time-in-grade for certain types.

But no matter the difference, she's got to have absolutely stellar Fitness Reports (or whatever the army calls them). Wouldn't you love to see them?

That's just great! A tip'O the hat to her.I wish more people were as responsible and determined as her.

My uncle is 62 and still on active duty commanding a "tin can".

No kidding? That's great, CH. It's a hell of an honor and a huge responsibility.

I had (and no doubt, still have) a great friend I met in college after I got out. He had been a combat engineer in Vietnam and we were both in the biology curriculum and a good deal older than most of the classmates so we sort of bonded. He helped me castrate a goat and so forth. As young veterans will, we talked baout our experiences and over the years as undergrads, I came to have a lot of respect for his sincerity and determination. He got through some tough courses by damned hard work. I am proud to say that I helped him with physics and math because he is a guy that you just naturally want to help and I had a knack for those things (back then!). Well, just before graduation he told me he had decided to talk to the Navy about a commission and that they were willing to help him with his financial situation (he had 2-3 kids and ran up education debt despite the GI Bill). last I heard of him was a Captain (in 2002 IIRC) and commodore of a squadron of destroyers out of Mayport. I wish him well and would love to get in touch with him. A natural leader who found exactly the right venue for his talent.

Tin can sailors and submariners form the strongest bonds, no question. I respect your uncle's accomplishments and am grateful for his service. I envy him his place in the hearts and minds of his shipmates.

I forgot although he did indeed command destroyers he was recently reassigned to I think a Perry?class frigate. But that in no way diminishes his lustre.

The navy was sort of a tradition in my Mother's family, whose name was Dewey.although my Gramps broke the mold by becoming a marine who luckily survived Belleau wood in WWI.
It broke my heart when they rejected me for complications of porphyria.
