Giving stuff at work--what's proper?

Usually I don't give anything, not even a card. I'm thinking maybe a card just to three people who are my superiors and the dept. secretary (because she's nice to me) this year. Would it be good manners to just give cards to your superiors and not the other people in your dept., like coworkers? There are a lot of people, and there are some I don't even know well. Or is it good etiquette to give everyone a card?

Privately, I'd send a card to the folks that I had an address for...something simple...just to acknowledge them...it shows that you were thinking of them in a "nice light" sort of way...

Now, as a superior or manager...if you did send something outside of a card alone, I'd include a note mentioning a specific project or the fact that the person was an invaluable source for you during the previous year...but keep it strickly business in tone...light hearted, but business...

ASMOF, I may be doing exactly that with my assistant in the next few days...

Thanks for the push...

She has a chest? I didn't notice. Now that you mention it, she does have a decent chest. Poor girl might need breast exams. I volunteer.

Well, the wife has taught me how to do Breast Exams and I feel it is my duty to help the women avoid breast cancer. Mammograms are very expensive so they don't do them as often. It doesn't have to be at the house. Motels, the back seat of a larger SUV or even in the office washroom. It's all good. It's about the people. I feel their pain.

cake

Instead of singling out individuals for cards, how about bringing in a nicely decorated cake, or a box of candy, for everyone to enjoy.

I generally don't dole out anything to co-workers or superiors, due to the fact that folks tend to expect the same gesture (or better) year after year.

Don't get on the roller coaster!!!

A bottle of scotch has always been appropriate.

Why? How about bringing individual stuff to show your appreciation? Those that get it know that you recognize their efforts. Those that don't know where they stand.

I give based on the relationship. It is my way or telling those that did well by me "Thanx for all your help. I recognize it and someday, I will pay you back". It also lets others know they are not in your good graces. It's all about the relationship.
