I might buy a 1995 C280

Anyone have thoughts on that? Good or bad?

Just look for oil leaks at the head gasket.

'95's also had bad engine wiring harnesses.

Good car.

We have a C280, and it has been a fantastic car. 27MPGs in the city.

The only way you'll get 27 mpg in the city with a 95 C280 is if you have another car pushing from behind. I've driven an identical 1994 C280 for the past 9 years. Not possible. Maybe you're confusing it with the 4 cylinder C220 in your signature?

I second the head gasket and wiring harness checks. Additionally, have a look at the lower control arm bushings - they wear out prematurely on these cars and that job can set you back anywhere from $700-$1000 including the alignment you'll need afterwards.

My 1994 C280 has consistently cost me around $2500 a year in maintenance/repairs. Sometimes that is with stuff you expect, like brakes and tires. Other times it is water pumps, air conditioning condensers, and rusting gas lines.

Caveat emptor on this one. Get it looked over by someone who knows these cars well.

How can you tell if the wiring harness has been replaced? I am shopping for a '95 E or 98-00 E , one thing that is astonishing is the 95' prices are sometimes on par with the 98's.

Is 95' a very good year or is 97-98 very bad?

Either by records, or if the visible wiring has cracking insulation.

IMHO the 95 124 is a better car than the 98 210s, but the 210s have more creature comforts, and are a better equipped car.

If it were my money, I would hold out for a 95 E420. Its got the bulletproof M119, a good rear end so good mpgs (figure 30ish freeway cruising), definitely not a slouch in the power department, excellent build quality, and very good to look at.
