Maybe it's just me but, of the 3 Yardbirds guitarists, I rate Jeff Beck a very distant third behind Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

Beck's guitar work is just too gimmicky for me.

I'm no musician, but I like the albums Jeff Beck did in the early 70's - Rough and Ready, Jeff Beck Group, and Blow by Blow - better than anything I've heard from Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page. Beck's guitar playing on those albums is just about as good as it gets for rock and roll or fusion guitar players, IMHO. I haven't heard Truth or Wired in many years, but I recall those being really good. I am not that wild about Beck's stuff after Wired.

Beck is more of a guitar technician, Clapton is a bluesman. I think a lot of it comes down to taste as well.

I agree. Personal taste has a lot to do with it. To me, Beck is always striving for a "sound" while Clapton is striving for a "style".

I'm not saying Beck is a bad guitarist or anything like that. He just doesn't say anything much to me. Some guys are fantastic technical masters of their instrument but their playing fails to touch my soul.

Here's a good example of Clapton's playing that touches my soul. I can't listen to this live version without shivers down my back. Especially when I play the DVD on my big surround system at outrageous levels. It's typical Clapton in the way he builds his solo.

One of my all time favorites, unbeatable ...

Tell the Truth - Derek and The Dominos

The year was 1971, the place was Miami and the recordings are known as the Criterion Sessions.
Sadly, nobody can bring back Duane Allman.

How true... Another of my all time favorites.
I was lucky enough to see the Allman Brothers when Duane and Barry Oakley were still alive and kicking. Great concert at Elon College.

Yeah, I like Duane. Along those lines...

Big fan of Derek Trucks, nephew of drummer Butch Trucks. I've seen Derek a few times. Not a lot of charisma however.

Clapton is much more personal, soulful. He touches your heart whereas Beck touches your brain-- "Wow, he did THAT!!"

Yeah, thats a one of a kind sound (Allmans). The older versions come across so much richer. Maybe the dope was better back than ....

I think Clapton went through a lot of grief over the loss of Duane, they were buddies, having one hell of a good time.

For that matter this one will always be my favorite Clapton album, to see him come back to life ... but maybe it's just the cover.

I also think, because of all the technology going digital, the sound of music got so cleaned up, often sterile in sense.

There's nothing like a virgin analog recording and/or a mighty ol' tube amp.
