Big Screen TV question

Is there a rule of thumb or guidelines for determining the optimal screen size based on the size of your viewing room and the various viewing positions? I was at a buddys house and he has a brand new 50 inch plasma. Within 10 feet it was not pleasant to look at, but further back it was fine.

thanks
Fred

If you feel compelled to flaunt your supposed opulence then buy one of them monsters,If you enjoy your movies and whatnot, and don't wish to get a crick neck stick to a 25 or 30"one.

I'm no expert, but a Google search using the keywords screen, size, and room will find you plenty of advice.

10ft or closer I prefer a 42" but after 12ft then the 50" seems best. I'm looking at a 50" plasma myself. Prices are dropping like rocks. RT

I have a 42 inch and we sit back 10 -12 feet depending on what couch we sit on and I feel it is great. I have friends that have 50 inch screens at that distance of viewing and less but I don't like the resolution. I recently hung a 40 inch screen in my bedroom with about an 8 foot viewing distance and it is fine. Take into account what type of service for tv you have dish or cable and that will make your choice easier.

I have a 10 YO RCA 52 inch and I love it. My grown kids laugh at me and say that I need to get one of those Hi Def t.v.s I like my old one just fine.

There are SEVERAL rules that vary by a factor of at least 2. You can go to www.highdefforum.com if you want "dig in" to this issue. My opinion is you want a screen size 1/3 of the distance you will sit from it. For example if you sit 8 feet away then get a 32". However, many people say 1/2. The main thing to know is that in the store, the sets look MUCH SMALLER than they will in your living room. Unless of course you have a giant living room.

It just depends on what you like. The larger the screen the farther away you can view it. Their great if you wear glasses for distance and don't want to bother with the glasses anymore for watching the telly.

Unless you really need glasses. I can see a big blob from across the room without mine. If it's yellow, maybe it's Spongebob.

Some people can be side-by-side in the same room, looking at the same set and both will have different opinions about the same thing...

Each person has a very different way of viewing televison...just as each person has a very different way of listening to the radio or music...it's in the eyes/ears of the beholder...

What I currently have is a 32" analog in a 10'x12' room...I personally would like something just a smig larger...but how much? 38"? 45"? 54"?

I would have to try out a few to see what I'd be comfortable with...and who's got the policy of trying it before you buy it? Not too many folks...so it's a crap shoot...

The best you can do is see where you want to go...see if you have the room to stuff it, then go looking for what appeals to you...making sure you remember what situation(s) you're taking the set back to...

A predominently dark room or one that is fairly bright?

One that has a TV stand or one that the set will have to be nailed to the wall somehow?

One that has critters with finger-fudge just waiting to "lay hands" on your expensive purchase, or toss that Nerf Phrisbee into the screen?

So-o-o-o many things to consider...and only one checkbook that has to avoid the flames...

Happy chopping!

I say you can never have too big! Personally I like using digital projection so the whole wall in front of the couch is my screen. I like to measure my viewing size in feet, not inches!
