Lying retailers

My wife wanted a La-z-boy recliner for Xmas. We went to the store yesterday, picked one ought and bought it. They asked if we wanted the floor model, we said no, want a new one. Ok, we'll have to order it from the warehouse. It'll be on the truck tomorrow. Call in the am to make sure it arrives. I called this morning and was told truck had not arrived. They called back an hour later, saying that it had arrived. We go down to pick it up. As we walk in the showroom door, we see a worker sliding the floor model off the showroom floor into the back of the store. We go up to the desk, show the paperwork. They say go around the back to the loading dock to pick up our chair. Chair is in a plastic bag when we get back there. My wife thinks the color looks different so asks the worker how the color compares to the one on the showroom floor. Worker replies that this is the one from the showroom floor so the color must be the same!
Everyone denies they were attempting to fool us. "We were just trying to accommodate you by giving you the floor model." Jeeezuz. They must have a lot of practice lying to their customers.
Needless to say, I gave them a piece of my mind and got my money back. It's so damn irritating when people try to take you for a fool.

There is a certain satisfaction that comes from undoing a slickery. At least they gave you that.

Not that La-z-boys are low end but they are normally sold in lower end furniture stores so you get the lower end of the food chain when it comes to integrity. I've had the agony of doing loans for a few furniture salespeople and learned a few things from them, first being they make sick money by almost any standard, second they lye for absolutely no reason, third they try so hard so make you believe #2 that you end up with a huge cluster fuk.

I'm a pretty frugal guy, so my knowledge of low end versus high end furniture stores is meager. But it wasn't a generic furniture store, it was a La-Z-Boy store exclusively. I was definitely left with the impression that lying was a way of life for those people (except for the poor naive teenage dock worker caught in the middle).

You saying furniture sales are like car sales then Kerry?

Oh wait, that's right, you wouldn't know the first thing about walking into an auto dealership.

Heh you're a funny guy, or at least I make you out to be that way.

Most retail is going to be like this, some places doing more so. I know the a-holes at Sears do this all the time

Hey, I did buy my TD from a dealership! But you're right, I'm still really a virgin on this issue.

I have been ripped off every time I have bought furniture from a furniture store. You have to really be sharp. I even had one place run my credit card through twice for the same purchase.

Now I buy everything at estate sales or antique auctions.

I don't mind owning a car that is 20 or 30 years old as long as it is built to last that long. Finding quality furniture from the 1930's and 40's is not easy, but it is out there.

And the sad part is, if anybody got fired over the incident it was probably the poor kid

Are you kidding? They don't care. Crap like that just rolls off their back. They shrug it off and look for the next target.

From my experience, the La-Z-Boy stores are very very proud of their product and their prices are not cheap. They do make a very good recliner and will cover it in whatever fabric you want.
