Whats your states sales tax on a used car? ,Texas got me for bb value

They charged me tax for full value on a beater car I just bought ,$4400 BLUE BOOK on an 84 300cd .Had to pay $320 for changing over title .She did say I could go get it appraised but had no comment on were I could get this done.Anyone get an appraisal on a used car for tax purposes. Im all for paying my share but lets be fair.I guess the Govt doesnt trust us about as much as we trust them.Law was passed in 2006 here in Texas .

6.25% for quite awhile, but on appraised value now [or blue book]. This fairly new law can really hurt. Of course it's necessity was caused by folks lying about what they paid for a car to skirt the taxable amount.
I just purchased Smash and had him registered middle of last summer and they only charged me tax on the value I actually paid, so I guess its selective somehow.
If you have to pay tax on Blue Book value then insurance companies should have to pay off total loss claims on Blue Book value. That ain't happening.
I imagine this will end up on O.D., so I'll never see it again....

6% in MI on the sales price....not too bad.

The best part is that its only about $36-38 a year to register one of these cars.

In New York, I've always been taxed according to the value on the bill of sale. I expect if the stated value is $20 for a 1999 300D in good condition, they may cry foul and assess it on bluebook value.

In IL, you pay taxes according to the value if you bought the car from a dealer. That is the case whether you are moving into the state with a vehicle or living here and buying one. For example, if I had bought a car from a dealer in MO, paid taxes there, then moved to IL, I would have to pay the taxes again.

The tax for a car purchased from a private party is $25.

Here in NC, if you buy it from a used car dealer, they take the value on the invoice. If you buy it from an individual, it's either the book value or sometimes they also look at an average of what those vehicles have sold for across the state.

Then it's 2% of that plus title and other misc. fees. As I remember, when I bought the '98 E300 a year and a half ago, total fees were in the neighborhood of $350.

I registered an 86 300sdl in Texas a few months ago. I looked at the state website beforehand and noticed that it could not come up with a value. So when I got there they just asked me what I paid. Of course I told them the exact amount ;-) I also had printed a bill of sale from the private seller. Maybe there are not enough 300SDLs to make their stats?

WI. taxes you on the sale price...5% plus the county you register it as being kept at gets another 0.5% tacked on...then you have the other fees like title, plates, etc...

BUT, if you get caught trying to cheat the taxman....oh boy howdy...

You don't want to know...forget about the car being driven...

I got "Fausta" for $1,500...I paid it all...it's nice when you can walk out of the DMV Building and feel nice and clean...and you don't have that "looking over your shoulder" feeling following you around...

here in iowa they ask me what i paid for it and i'm taxed accordingly.the kid just gave back the sdl as he won't be needing it for awhile.but rather then go thru the hassle of getting the form for gifts etc i just said i paid $100 for it.cost me $5 for tax $15 to transfer and $19 for license.usually here in iowa if you buy from a dealer they send all the paper work right to your courthouse so you pay all fees at the dealer.this way they know they are getting the tax money they are owed.

It could only be that cheap if you have it in "NON-OP" status.
