I have a bunch of music files downloaded from limewire. I would like to put them on an i-pod and if possible, connect the i-pod to my 1976 Sansui 881 receiver (left & right aux conectors) to play them on a real stereo system. This when I'm not playing records on the Pioneer PLA45D turntable. (You have to be an old fart to know what this is). Does anyone know if this can be done?

Go to where the downloads are being put(the file they are in) remember where they are, then go into Itunes and go to preferences and tell it to search that folder also for files. For the stereo you need a RCA to 3.5mm adapter and that will work just perfect.

Yes, you can connect an iPod to your old Sansui, it will cost about $5 for the correct cables to do so.

If it was me doing this, I would invest the $50 and buy a universal docking station and I would get the power supply to.

Should I assume the universal docking station takes the place of cables between the receiver & i-pod? And why is this a better option?

It's just the docking station where the ipod docks, the wires go into the dock. This route is supposed to have better quality sound, since you are not going through the headphone jack...

Have fun listening to a proper stereo and not stupid little baseless headphones.

Just remember to start with the iPod's volume set way down. You do not want to blow the inputs on the Sansui. I hooked up a similar set up between my home computer and my Kenwood. I use this to play mp3s on my stereo and the reverse to rip albums into CDs for the car.

It's amazing how somewhat dated hi-fi pieces can live on when they have enough "Tape Mon" in/outs and Spkr "A" "B" and "A+B" switches! On one house PC, and with an assortment of cables, I can have the PC audio (including iTunes and Windows Media Player) played through studio monitors or the desktop speakers; capture and convert FM radio, tapes and LPs to digital.
