I know they have some coral islands in the pacific, But I didn't see much of the littoral straights when I was there in the early 90's. They did have a 'big deal' local sea god, and or it's relatives, celebrated with a sister temple on the mainland via three foot deep paper from exploded firecrackers. I believe at least one of the islands in the channel was supposed to be one or more of their skeletons. Perhaps they built the hexagons.
Surely, I've got it all wrong.

There is also the devil's post pile in Montana I believe and the giant's causeway in N. Ireland.

There was a raging (well, as much as scientists rage) debate between 19th century Darwinians and a handful of Harvard scholars more or less led by Louis Agassiz concerning the origin and evolution of atolls. Darwin had written about it http://pauillac.inria.fr/~clerger/Darwin.html and people argued for the next 100 years.
