DTV Conversion

Hawaii goes digital before the rest of the nation, starting tomorrow. My office building doesn't have cable or sat, so for the two analog sets here, I set up the convertor boxes.

After the DTV Coupon and Best Buy's $5 off sale, the APEX boxes were $10 each. It comes with a remote, RG and component cables, batteries for the remote and instructions. I noticed that the instructions don't consider that people with OTA sets might still have VCRs recording their shows, since there is no mention of them in the hook up instructions.

After setting up the cables, there is a menu that wants to know what time zone you're in, what screen format tv you have and then it takes about 4 minutes for the box to scan for available channels. Some new features come with the box for old TVs: image zooom, MTS, Favorite Channel, Channel Guide and Signal Strength testing.

Not all the channels are switched on, but there's enough of a carrier signal for the box to pick up and register. Of those that are working, the picture is as good as a strong analog signal, however marginal signals will be pixelated or freeze until the antenna is re-oriented.

Just hook the box to the VCR and from the VCR to the TV. You can then record and view.

I applied for a coupon. Funding has been depleted, the government is broke.

Yes and No . . . funding has been depleted, but the coupon/cards expire if not redeemed, so applicants are being sent cards as the unredeemed ones expire.

Got my two coupons a few weeks ago. Picked up the boxes at Kmart. $9 additional for each one.
