Barett Jackson Sales

so the SL's are bringing some good $$, I was surprised however that a 76 450SEL ,which was owned by Doris Day brought only $7800, I thought it a bargin, looked to be pampered
Makes you wonder

Are those auctions televised? I was thinking that someone said they were.

That's probably something I don't get. I'm not sure what my cable service is supposed to have. It doesn't seem to have much that I'd want to watch.

I never plan ahead to watch the televised Barrett Jackson auctions, but I can't help myself when I catch it while channel surfing at bedtime.

I can't wait until Verizon finally had their FIOS run to my house. They keep saying it will be SOON . . . . Cox blows.

Mercedes sedans that are not AMG or limited production virtually never rebound on the classic market like the SL's, and even then, it's a thirty year wait for the bounce.

The Doris Day 450 SL went for that much likely because it was her car. The 1975 and 1976 California emissions Mercedes had thermal reactors under the hood to deal with emissions. The V-8 cars had two of them.

These eventually fail. allowing high teps to escape. Being under the hood they tend to burn the pain off the hoods and sometime warp the sheet metal.

They can be replaced. Last time I priced one they were $1600 each.

Has enough time passed so that they are no loner required? I know some Porsche 911's of that year had them but you don't see many of these reactors now. But then, I live in Oklahoma and we have no emissions tests here.

Or safety inspections for that matter.

Just to be clear It's a 450SEL, not an SL

I saw that 450SEL cross the block; it looked real good on the outside, but no underhood and no interior shots. I thought the $8000 it brought was a fair price for w116.

As for watching the auction on Speed, I've learned that the best way is it DVR it, then fast forward through a lot of it (esp. commercials). I can make the 6 hour program watchable in about 2 hours. That's acceptable to me.

I find the Barrett Jackson auctions entertaining and informative. It's fun to fantasize which car I would want to own. Barrett Jackson is a class auction with correct and proper cars. The commentators are real car people with plenty of knowledge.

I have no interest in the other televised auctions such as Mecum which offer lesser quality autos.

The hammer price indicated that it was not sold....or have they not updated it?

Either way a 76 450SEL is not very desirable. I think the celeb factor doesn't make it significantly more valuable.

Sorry about the SL / SEL mistake. My eyes are not what they used to be.

Still.. This car, if it has the California emissions, has the reactors on it.

And $8,000? I would rather go a bit more and get a 109 6.3.

well that probably explains it, and yes these auctions are live through the weekend on SPEED, a great way to zone out, avoid all the other things I SHOULD be doing and wish oh wish that somehow someday I will have the money to attend and buy the car, no CARS I want
