It's nice when we actually behave as our constitution says we believe. I hope that now race will become a much less divissive issue in our country.

I only HOPE that is true.
My FEAR is that race will be used to shut up any critism of any Obama program or idea.
Time will tell, but when have politicians refused to use any weapon in their arsenal ?

Not in the least bit. Its just another presidential inauguration.

All peaceful democratic transitions. Like it should be everywhere. But isn't.

ForcedInduction 01-20-2009 03:23 PM

For the third thread on this topic...

Which of the last 43 inaugurations in 233 years has it been any different? None.

"Peace on earth" is a stupid idea, its physically impossible because of human nature. The fact they spent a record amount of money on security proves this wasn't a "peaceful" event. Take away that security and Obama would have been dead months ago.

Yeah, as Bot pointed out. The transitions from one andministration to the next in the US are not the norm fro much of the world. We forget that a lot of times, I think. Having grown up in the midst of the civil rights era and seen the effects of racial inequality close at hand from my youth, I see todays inauguration as being quite a watershed event.

Perhaps in the FUTURE seeing people of either sex or any race being sworn in as our president will no longer be noteworthy in and of itself. Today however, it is still pretty damn special.

Denial, it ain't just a river.

First woman in space .. historic. First time man broke the sound barrier ... historic. First female to ride in the front of the bus .. historic. First minority to be elected to the office of POTUS ... historic.

Ideals are not stupid, even if the attainment of them is pretty unlikely. They are still important. It's best to aim high than not at all, wouldn't you say?

To be defeated by giants is far better than to surrender to dwarves.

The first person to break the sound barrier and the first person in space, THOSE are historic. Picking the wrong seat on the bus and first person without a penis in space, footnotes at best.

How about if I go smoke a cigarette in a no smoking section and refuse to stop/leave? That should be historic since smokers are being oppressed and segregated.
