Early 70s muscle cars... which ones do you like?

Which early 70s muscle car do you prefer? These cars range from the 1971-73 model years. Sorry if I left some out. I originally wanted this to be a Camaro, Mustang, Barracuda only thread, but then I started thinking about the cool Challengers, Trans AMs, etc.

Camaro:

Malibu SS:

Corvette:

Firebird/Trans AM:

GTO:

Mustang:

Torino GT:

Montego GT:

Challenger:

Barracuda/Cuda

Duster 340 (and Dodge Demon)

AMC AMX/Javelin:

Charger Rally: (forgot this one originally)

I was always a Ford guy, so the Mustang would have been at the top of my personal list. Having said that, although not marketed as a muscle car, the extremley clean exterior lines of the first generation AMX/Javelin appealed to me. Too bad it wasn't made by one of the big three.

They all suck, IMO. By this time they were poorly engineered, poorly made and could only go fast in a straight line. It is cars like these ('72 was the year I got my license) that turned me into a foreign car buff. I would take a '67 Mustang, though....

You need to add "none of the above" to the choices. If I had to pick one to save my life I'd make sure my will is in order. If I knew death would be immediate, I guess I'd pick a Mustang convertible because of the resale value.

The earlier models of most of these cars were much more better designed. I always liked the Chevy Camaro. My brother had a '69 Indianapolis pace car version.

Knowing the current value of these cars I would take a Hemi Cuda convertible in a heartbeat.

The beauty, and the curse of American cars during this era was the available options list. You could order a true muscle car right off the options list. Add the biggest engine to the lightest body, high (numerical) locking differential, and delete all the stuff that added weight--heater, radio, etc. It would go extremely fast in a straight line--a 1/4 mile straight line to be exact.

Or you could ( for Mustang buyers) tick off the H.O. small block engine, handling package, and disc brake options and have a fairly good handling, fast car.

Or you could equip it like a mini Limo with all the posh seats, A/C and 8 track players to give it the "luxury" appeal.

If I could go back in time and order a car new it would be a 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee

When they we worked the production lines for 71 then stopped producing a 2 door coronet, the only 2 door "mid size" sedan they built was the Charger. so they added the Super Bee to the charger line, but it only lasted one year.

I love that car.

Many of the ones on the list aren't true "muscle cars". For my favorite, I'd have to do a write-in 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II, Ford's answer to the Plymouth Superbird and Charger Daytona...

I have had experience with the following...

1970 Chevelle SS 396 Awesome acceleration plus my friend and I beat a Jag XKE on the NYS Thruway - going over 140mph. Cowl induction really works!

1972 GTO 455 HO convertible. Awesome car! Fast and handled pretty well for a big car. By then most development was on the Firebird so the GTO was kind of dying on the vine. It was the car that got me hooked on ragtops. and blondes. and mini skirts. and stockings. It was owned by a girlie gearhead named Marj...

1973 AMC Javelin 401 Looks fast even standing still. My cousin still has it.

1971 Buick GS 455 Convertible MINE. Loved it! Fast and classy with AC and power everything and could still take anything newer than 1973. (smogged up crap)

Non sequitor...

My favorite muscle car was my 1967 Goat. That car would run all day at well over 100mph.

My favorite fast car was my 1996 Impala SS. It would out handle a 740i and out run most anything on the road...
