Can anyone date this old Craftsman tool set?
Just for kicks. Found and cleaned up an old Craftsman tool set that was my dad's. Does anyone have any idea how old it might be? The case is metal instead of plastic and has a gray, almost textured paint inside; for some reason the decorations stamped into the metal case remind me of a Harley emblem but there is no wording left at all. Each of the sockets is heavily stamped Craftsman and has xxx decoration in a ring; they go from 1/4 to 7/16, mostly by 32nds. It includes a T-bar which I have never seen in any of my newer sets. There is also an extension (which may not belong) which has a locking(?) ball in one end and seems to be slimmer than the other extension; also note the T-bar has locking balls too. The ratchet handle looks so new that I wonder if it belongs to the set.
I would guess this dates to about 1950. What do you think? Could it be worth anything? Last edited by tyl604; 01-24-2009 at 06:04 PM. Reason: Picture |

Take it to Sears they could probably ID it for you. It is probably worth at least $50.
Checkout ebay for similar sets

That ratchet dates from the late '70's or early '80's when they switched over to lever control and carries on to today.

I don’t think that ratchet came with that set. Especially if you’re thinking ‘50s.
I have a 3/8 Craftsman ratchet from the ‘70s and it still has the straight grip, flat back and front. That wrench is later than that. I'm not vintage tool guy though. Do a google search and you'll find there are plenty out there though.

Give a few pics of the Craftsman script...that's the only way to ID the date to a window...

I bet the original ratchet broke and they took it back and the one there now was current at the time it broke.
The sockets look older than anything I have and mine probably date from the mid sixties or so.

Apparently Sears can answer your question.
