I need to ship a hood

internationally. I've had zero luck getting a hood box from any of the body shops in the county!. I've been to all of them in my town, the city where my college is and have called around.

so.. help me out I've got to pack it so it can sit in a container and protect the hood itself.

I was thinking put pool noodles around the edges and then some foam on the front and back then wrap the crap out of it in shrink wrap, then some blankets, then more shrink wrap.

Go to a furniture store they usually have a good assortment of large boxes. I actually got a good one for a 123 hood that was once the packing for a fancy (glass) king head board. Make sure you take out insurance.

If you're anywhere near handy with a hammer, nails and a saw, crate the hood and grill...is it just the hood or both pieces?

Start with a pallet, then wrap the p*ss out of the hood, protecting all the
corners and edges (pool noodles should be just the right thing, then strap/secure the hood to the pallet, support the hood's center with foam so there's no chance of "sagging" if the pallet should be rudely "dropped" (like that doesn't ever happen!! ), then frame around the pallet (sides and top) enough to keep smaller boxes from "dropping" into the framework and/or cover the sides completely with 1/4" plywood (cheap is better than paper/cardboard), slap on some postage, call the freight company and it's OTD!

If the guy is paying for shipping, include the cost of wood and materials, and write off the labor...besides, you're doing this for a fellow MB'r, eh?

If you expect to have the hood survive the trip in a container or on an airplane, you're going to have to crate it properly and secure it to a skid. Forget about cardboard..........

3rded.
I don't see the need for a pallet though, just dbl up the 2x4s on the edges so forks can get under it.

i was thinking crating. this is the delorean hood so its valuable.

I didnt quote the guy for crating it so he's going to owe me.

I will go with the idea of just doubling up the 2x4's under is so they can fork it. I'll draw up the crate size and have them cut all the wood at lowes since I dont have a table saw. I need one of those things

I wish I had a roof rack for the benz since I have to drive this crap down to Ft Lauderdale to the port. The guy is paying for my fuel, I told him that. Plus its a two for one, I have another delorean part that needs to go to an owner/friend in the same town.

If you have a circular saw, you can cut it all yourself. Some extra 2x4 bracing is good. Another good idea is to add short bits of 2x4 around the hood to lock it in place once you slip it into the crate, and you'll need extra 2x4 around the outside to screw through.

Pack it so that you could drop it from a 2 story building without damage. I think that fairly approximates what you are up against. It will need to be a pretty large crate. You might check out any dimensional rules so you don't end up with a giant freight bill. You could be looking at a ton of money I would think. And it wouldn't hurt to write "top load only" on it. Good luck.

Why don't you ask the guy how he'd like to see it shipped? If he has an idea and he thinks you can follow simple plans, have him draw it up, send a check for the materials and you make it to his specs...

That way, you don't get "gigged" in the favorable comments section of any E-Bay or C-List boards and you have the proof that it was shipped according to how the recipient wanted it...and be sure everyone is happy with the amount of insurance you put on the package...

Then, nail and mail away and be done with it...

As a packaging engineer, try and keep your footprint to less than a pallet (If possible). Having a fork-accessible from all sides will get it there safer. If a fork truck guy can't get it from his direction he will bang it around until he can. Also make it so that you can stack around 1,000lbs on top of it. If you build a crate, it's well worth it to add a few cheap straps from the corners (So it can be lifted by crane)

To get it safely across the ocean you will have to build a crate around it.....

In the Metro Detroit area, we usually place the hood in the trunk of a Lincoln Town Car or Cadillac Sedan DeVille, and park it at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Somebody will usually find them when they get ripe, after several days.

OOPS! Sorry! I missread your post and it says about shipping a hood from a Delorean, not a mobster. Detroit, is still pretty good at doing some things.

I know, I work in a warehouse from time to time and have put forks through crates(empty)

regardless, this crate can have nothing at all on it since its a frign rare hood and the owner doesn't want anything stacked on it at all.

the hood is wider than a standard pallet. It's going into a conex and then coming out and onto his car

sold this thing without ebay.. only paypal(lost like.. $50 to fees)

Why can't you stand it up on a pallet like they do glass, if its going into a container?
