That sounds like our spring and summer. Or 9 months of the year. The other 2 seasons are almost fall and almost spring. During almost fall and almost spring I stare up at the night sky like a welfare lunatic.

Over here we get over 300 clear-sky days a year, though it's not always great for telescoping because of turbulence in the upper atmosphere. But the moon and Venus sure were pretty last night.

It's hard to maintain the sanity if I didn't have job I'd go crazy.

There is a demand for product but not at the price American workers deliver it at. I'm as guilty as the next guy. When faced with a choice of a set of the big countersink bits, similar to hole saws but with a flat surface at the bottom of the circular hole, and the US made set is $200, 10 on the quality scale, and a Chinese made set, maybe 8 or 9 on the quality scale is selling for $30, damn it's tempting, and in fact, I bought the Chinese made set.

A lot of the reason for the cost difference is owing to China dumping waste untreated into rivers and the atmosphere whereas we, with an ounce of two of sense, have agencies like the EPA so that we don't sacrifice the health of our life support system in service of cheap manufacturing.

Same with OSHA -- they can be a pain but workers in China get chewed up and spit out. Not to mention living in poverty the while. We support their industrial model when we buy their cheap stuff. And awareness of enviro degradation is growing in China.

I don't see the value of trashing air and water in service of excessive consumerism, the sort of which that is swelling our landfills to capacity.

I'm still drinking Magic Hat!

But I agree with Jeff, I'm building a cash reserve for some maneuver room. Last year I started and this year I'm going to expand it.

Paying off all my debt is right behind that priority. I should have my CC's paid off and done with pretty soon. Than onto my student loans, luckly I don't have to many.

Ol' firebrand Pat Buchanan has pointed out that our trade releationships with China resemble that of a colony to the parent nation, with us in the "colony" role. We export raw materials, they export finished goods.

I saw a journalist from Detroit on the Charlie Rose show a couple of weeks ago. He was talking about the way rust belters feel when being dissed by gubmint and the banking suits. He was saying that those that build autos make something you can touch, sit in, and drive to work and that you can't build an economy solely on banking services, lawyering services, and fast food restaurants.

Well, maybe a small nation like Switzerland can get ahead with a large percentage of its labor devoted to banking but Iceland is tanking hard on overmuch devotion to international banking.

Yep. That's exactly why I have no faith that this "recession" is temporary. We have outsourced the very fabric of what made this country what it use to be, manufacturing.

My federal economic recovery plan:

Offer tax free incentives for domestic manufacturing. That would stimulate jobs and offset cheap foriegn labor.

And further blow up our debt with no guarantees, as American labor would still be more expensive.

Maneuver room is good, but I'd first plug the cash leaks, at least the CC's. Otherwise it's like adding oil to an engine that leaks like a sieve.
