It's not shocking. The suicide rate has been rising steadily in the US over the last few years, most noteably in the middle aged population. You would expect a proportionate amount of them to be army deaths.

So? The weak are self weeding themselves out just like in the rest of society. Still comes under Darwin's Laws where the less fit make way for the more fit.

The medical technology to save the physically wounded has greatly improved, but for the psychologically injured, not so much.

Maybe they were just mentally less tolerant and the additional stress has shown them to be wanting. We have a lot of that in real life too. The military is a more stressful job so you have more issues.

Using your "logic" we could be saving quite a bit of money by stopping the funding of research to treat diseases. You should submit some sort of application for a grant to study this.

I believe there is a difference between a physical illness and psychological "illnesses". One might be worthwhile to treat. Take a 40 yo person who has useful life. Is it worth investing in him/her? Absolutely. If I were at say 80 and needing a heart transplant. Would I be a worthwhile investment since I have no useful life left? Absolutely not. Do I believe in psychology or psychiatry? Absolutely. As much as I believe in voodoo.

Maybe. But there is no real way to treat psychological crap, is there? While psychology gathers data scientifically, the rest of it is highly suspect. If the mechanic fixed your car like they "fix" minds, would you be pissed? Bring your car to a shop and there are now 5 possible diagnoses with 5 different ways to fix it. No telling how long it will take or what it will take to fix it. It will be done sometime. In the meantime, keep paying the bill.

There was a famous case of this woman who "rocked" her kids on orders from God. At the end of the rock party, 2 were dead and 1 was severely brain damaged. 2 mindfawks said she was sane, 2 said she was insane. Is that the profession I should pay respect to? I can get those answers from the Voodoo Queen or Ms Cleo.

Reporter at interview: Well Chancellor Hitler, I understand your 1937 Eugenics law has gone far in getting rid of the feeble and the physically unfit in our society.

Now what's that you were saying about the Jews and the Communists?

A 40 year old who is "worth investing in" can get hit by a bus, slip on a banana peel or get HIV from a careless partner. If he's killed, it's a clean loss off the investment sheet, But man, if he lingers, wow, that could cost. Go call the Soylent Green Dept!!!

BTW, how do you feel about 70 year old MB cars? Outlived their usefulness? Not worth investing in?

"Well," said the dervish. "The answer is, 'well.' "

Kuan 01-30-2009 01:27 PM

Mental illness doesn't mean they cannot contribute. Many brilliant people are mentally ill.

MTI 01-30-2009 01:29 PM

Seems like someone could use a little therapy . . .

Ah, there is where the problem is. You take my answer of "worth investing in" to mean a guarantee of a return. My point is that at 40, the chances of a ROI is higher than at 80 or do you disagree?

I would say they have outlived their usefulness seeing as how the newer units are more efficient and less hassle to maintain.

Maybe so but are many mentally ill people brilliant? I don't think that most of the mentally ill can contribute.
