If I've never had a shot of anything, my first shot is ALWAYS straight up...room temperature...
If I don't know what the item tastes like, putting ice in the glass, or lighting the damn thing on fire isn't going to make me like it better...that's my bet... Once I've been able to down a few shots of the stuff straight, I have an idea what to expect and if my tastebuds will survive another bath of the stuff or not...ice masks the essence of the drink...its body, it aroma and its heritage (if it wasn't just scooped out of the bathtub 5 minutes before I got there...). How can you tell the difference between an aged 12-year-old Scotch and one that brags that it's been sitting in its cask for 7 years and they both are at 35°-40°F? How can you tell if the spirit you're drinking came from either a hickory cask/barrel or an oak cask/barrel if your tongue isn't at its most nimblest if you're bathing it in a liquid that's just above freezing? In that case, let me find a flag-pole, apply my tonque to it and you can pour your favorite spirit down that pole and over my tongue to unfreeze me...I'll get as much accomplished both ways...and both ways you'll waste good liquor... If any drink needs ice...my feeling is that it's not good liquor to begin with...someone is hiding something...and at that point, I don't care, nor do I want to know, what the label says...
