Watching ice melt

I know,,, sounds a lot like watching paint dry, but after the winter we are enduring,,, the sun came out today and this crap is melting like no tomorrow. The roads have been the worst I can ever remember in my 50 some odd years of driving, and hope to heck the groundhog doesn't see his shadow tomorrow.

This winter has been brutal. Looks like we might be in for another round this week. The roads here are brown from the sand and salt, all the cars are filthy.

I washed my 95 and my Bull today. I caught a glimplse of the 95 in the street and it looked as if someone had sprayed it with clear coat. It's been a long time since it was washed. I left Chicago because of the salt.

The road salt is so thick on the S-10 ("How thick is it?") that it's actually flaking off in bits and pieces...

Yesterday, a friend didn't recognize me driving up 'til he saw the hard-hat on the dash...then he said he knew it was me...

Maybe I should drive it into a Wave-A-Wand and spray a layer or two of salt off this thing...it should still be black inderneath...

My red Golf is now a gray brown from all the salt and sand. I'll wash it in the spring, or when it rains...whichever comes first.

December here was pretty good, but since then we've been lacking moisture and our snowpack is well below average. Hoping for some more snow.

We've been selling bagged icemelt by the truckload to speed up the process. It's getting real short nationwide now due to a raw material shortage, even rock salt. I put an order in for another truckload on Saturday and they're thinking maybe a month. We've got independent hardware stores, who can obviously get it cheaper through their co-ops, buying multiple pallets from us because they just can't get any, and Lowe's & HD are sending customers to us. We're cutting them off today since we're down to our last 11 tons, until the shipment shows up, to make sure we have enough on hand for our regular snowplow customers. Hate to turn down sales but we've got to protect our base. We're definitely going to sit down with the new customers this year and try to get their needs covered early on. Obviously the winter weather is a crap shoot, and it's been snowy/icy thusfar. At this point it's gravy money. We've gone from 1 truckload to 4 with little more than word of mouth. Not big money by any means, but clearing $9K/truckload during our off season at least pays the utility bills.
