Oops... Those Pesky Nanny Taxes Again

Citing Tax Troubles, An Obama Appointee Withdraws
By Jeff Zeleny

President Obama’s choice for the position of chief White House performance officer has withdrawn from the post, an administration official said Tuesday, after coming forward with concerns about her tax returns.

Nancy Killefer, appointed by the president last month to a new position to scrutinize government spending, told the administration on Monday that she intended to step down from the position at the Office of Management and Budget. An administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the announcement was not finalized, confirmed that Ms. Killefer’s withdrawal came because of questions with her taxes.

The withdrawal, first reported by NBC News, came as the White House was already grappling with controversy over the tax returns of Tom Daschle, the president’s choice to lead the Health and Human Services Department.

The administration official said the reasons for Ms. Killefer’s withdrawal would be released later on Tuesday.

Ms. Killefer, head of consulting firm McKinsey & Co.’s Washington office, was named to the new position on Jan. 7.

In the announcement, Mr. Obama said she would help “restore the American people’s cofidence in their government.”

“Meeting the challenges of rebuilding our economy and bringing a new sense of responsibility to Washington isn’t just about rearranging numbers on a balance sheet – it’s about renewing people’s trust in their leadership,” Mr. Obama told reporters at his transition headquarters, with Ms. Killefer at his side. “Because in order to restore confidence in our economy, we must restore the American people’s confidence in their government – that it’s on their side, spending their money wisely, to meet their families’ needs. I am confident that with Nancy’s leadership, and the efforts of leaders on both sides of the aisle, we will do just that.”

Great. Another tax cheat on the public dole. It's sickening, when I think of the AMT I have to pay, and the taxes on my last years losing investments. Wish I could just say "Hey I forgot". Seeing these pigs scoff the law really raises my ire.

If Obama had his way, she would have been. I'm becoming less impressed with this new open and transparent government.

I'm impressed transparency is ferreting out these issues, rather than his folks making an effort to cover up or downplay them.

And actually, I don't really care about Daschle's tax problem--I don't think it makes a whit of difference. It is his lifelong dream of socializing medicine that scares me.

I disagree. Something in TD's timeline rings hollow to me. Either he or his accountant in June 2008 thought he might have a problem with the limo and driver taxable fringe benefit?.... Six months later...he files his amended returns. .........
Then in Nov or December (who knows) he's approached by the O team to serve as head of HHS. Discussions presumably carry on and some of this vetting process begins. Obama later nominates him for HHS.....
Then he tells the Pres he's got some tax problems.

IF this is an accurate time line, Obama must be furious with this guy..or at his team of vetters. I'm shocked he is not outraged at being deceived. He's the president fer pete sake! If he's not going to demand the truth from his staff....well, they're all going to go their own way.

Sooner or later, he's got to start knocking heads. Quit talkin' and start leading.
"Tom, I'm disappointed that you didn't tell my staff and myself the entire story of your tax issues. I demand complete honesty from my staff. You failed me. Please withdraw your name from consideration"
Nothing too hard about that. Is there?

Sure, most accountants are jaded.;)
Heck, we get the front row seats and watch people pull back their veneers and give us a peek into their souls. Pretty ugly sight at times. Income tax return setting...somewhat. Death and divorce settings....big time.:eek:

But still, if you are Pres. and this guy isn't straight with you from the get go, are you going to tolerate it? That's the biggest problem I have with TD.... and with Obama for acquessing.

Show some spine. Cut him loose. That's my advice.;)

Her entire tax liability was $949.

What do you expect? $128,000 is an oversight, but $949 is cheating!
She needed to 'forget' about more $$ to remain a viable candidate. She set her sights too low

This is starting to get ridiculous from both directions. I've sent the IRS more than that over typos, that woman should not have been withdrawn.

Daschle, on the other hand, was Obama's first big political mistake. But this woman and the Geithner thing were really just typical tax disputes that all people with complicated finances get into. You simply pay your bill and penalities, and move on, BFD. I certainly don't hold it against someone, else I would have no small business owners or self-employeed professionals among my friends, simply because the tax system has become so complicated that just about anyone who belongs to those classes ends up paying some sort of oversight. Daschle, on the other hand, looked to me like he attempted to avoid paying taxes on purpose. Why Obama wasted political capital on that tired wretched pol from the old days is a mystery. I have heard others mention that Daschle might have obtained compromising photos of Michelle Obama taken by Girls Gone Wild, I can think of no other explanation for this fiasco.

Don't stop being scared, we have an excellent supply of dreamers. I have checked my own tax situation, and my landscapers are well-hidden under the catagory of "office plants", so my qualifications are steller.
