Toyota Venza - target market?
Who is it? To me, it says old or older woman type vehicle.
What say you? |

It looks pretty close to a traditional station wagon to me. Maybe just a hint of SUV thrown in for good measure. The front is kinda butt ugly. The sides and back are ok.
The AWD V6 might not be a bad car. 18/25 mpg 268hp 246lb-ft 0-60 6.7sec $30k It competes with the Nissan Murano and the Ford Edge. The target market, according to Toyota, is "active boomers" and young couples with small families. A next step after the mini-van I guess.

I don't get the segment - all the inconvenience of an SUV without the benefits.

My dad and I went crossover shopping this past weekend. The Venza was one of the vehicles we test drove. I was quite impressed. The ride was fairly tight. The engine made a bit of noise when my dad put his foot in it but it seemed pretty solid, very comfy, lots of storage. Quite nice.
We test drove the Venza, RX350, RDX, X3, Equinox, EX35 and Murano. I have to say I was really really disappointed in the Equinox. The fully equipped one ran about $35k and it was a POS. The vehicle was noisy, no power, fit and finish was OK the materials were junk. Hard plastics, and just not very classy. The Venza for the same price was sooooo much nicer. I felt embarrassed for the sales man having such a POS to try and sell. My dad ended up getting a EX35. He got one fully loaded. I never really liked SUV's but that thing is very very cool. I got a chance to take it for a sort spin and I was very impressed. For a SUV it handled very well.

Last week's WSJ car guy had a review of the Venza. He gave the car the lowest marks of anything I have ever read, anywhere. It was actually rather entertaining to see a vehicle pummelled so badly.
Basic fault is the vehicle was so overweight. It drove badly, it had a poor ride due to silly 20" wheels, despite AWD it was useless in the snow, and the fuel economy was non-existent. Reviewers suggestion was buy a Camry - it rides better, drives better, uses less fuel, and has 90% of the utility. Better yet, Toyota should make a wagon version of the Camry rather than offering us only a quasi-SUV. Anywho, his $.02, not mine. - JimY |

The Camry used to be available in a station wagon. It was nice but they dropped it due to poor sales.
One of the best cars I ever had was a Toyota Cressida wagon. It had the V6 from the Supra and performed well.

I wonder if we will see the Camry wagon again since wagons were crushed by the SUV craze.

Looks like the Matrix only fat.
I've always been a fan of the Toyota wagon. I went and test drove a Matrix back in 2002 when they came out. it was a nice car. My only problem with new Toyota cars is that they are addicted to the transversally mounted engine and trans-axle. they make these wagons with FWD or AWD and both suck for hauling a load. and lets face it, if you have a wagon you are going to be hauling stuff, be it kids or junk. I've owned my tercel wagon forever it seems, and back in 2002 I had just started my first "real" job and was living with my mom going to college, and some how a new car seemed like the "next step" for me. I wanted a wagon and that lead me to the Matrix. what stopped me from buying it? the transversally mounted engine and trans-axle, and the fact that Toyota would not sell me an AWD in a manual transmission. The salesman and I walked the lot talking about cars. and I looked at other cars. and it lead to my discovery that you cannot buy a Toyota with AWD or 4WD and get a manual unless its a pickup. I've been keeping my eyes open. but they just don't sell them here. in other countries sure, but not in the USA. I'll stick to my 26 year old car. plus with an $80 price tag, its paid off.

I liked the look of the Venza and I thought it rode as well as any of the others we drove in that class. The Acura, Lexus and Infinity were a but more refined but I think they are a a different class in terms of build and design. The interior of the Venza was well laid out and very comfy. My dad broke his femur last year so his main concern was seat comfort and it passed the "ass" test for him. Lots of handy features like keyless entry/start, back up camera and a few other things. I guess you cannot please everyone. I liked it just fine for what it was. I would not own a cross over because it's not what I want but if I was in the market for one, that would be near the top of my list with in that price point.
