99 neon for 92 mitsu eclipse awd turbo

My co worker's got a baby, with another one on the way... His GSX wont cut it for a baby hauler. It's a 92, with the 6 bolt engine, and the 4 bolt rear end. I'm told they're a desireable combonation. It's got 70k on it, no rust (from california), just got a clutch, and looks to be in pretty good shape. power windows and locks, and cruise. My neon needs a new trunk, but it's rust free otherwise... Got new a new clutch, headgasket, timing belt, water pump, tires, brakes, battery and an alternator...

He wants to trade straight up... I'm tempted due to the speed, but, I'm attached to the neon (plus it's the newest car i've ever owned)

Neon BB is like 1800, bb on his is like 2500...

Im bored with slow, and it hasnt been really reliable... Ugh, you know? Torn between cars. Cant afford to own both...
Thoughts, opinions?
~Nate

Death traps? Only in offset frontal collisions, it's not like they ever happen anyway(ok, so they're the most common of all collisions... point taken)

Yeah, GSX in mitsu speak means awd, and turbo...

hmmmm

expresso... interesting...

I think the eclipse would be a better chick magnet.

the early 4g63t motors are pretty stout. I had a dodge colt I was going to do a 4g63t swap to and later on swap in the TSI awd system for STI killing.

yeah... nothing in my price range is going to be reliable, may as well be a fast chick magnet if nothing else... I CANNOT do boring anymore, it's killing me...
82 150: Big, ugly, loud.. Awesome first ride. Toronado. Rare, sleek, low. Grand am. Missing parts (tree impact) Cheap, funny, owned for 4 days. Escort: Hated it, boring. Tracker: Fun, too much fun, rusted out junk. Neon: Boring...
Eclise?

Are you crazy??? Make the swap immediately... I remember reading about the Neon of that era being one of the worst cars tested in all the history of some automotive magazine. I can't believe you've fixed that many things on it...

I drove my friends 2nd Gen GSX, and fast doesn't describe in I was pushing 15 Psi of boost when I hit boost cut. I was like WTF, then I looked at the speedo and saw that I was traveling nearly 140MPH, and was not out of gear nor power.

And I thought that the warning I got in my Miata doing 102 in a 55 was bad.

My kid had a 95 and a 97 GSX. 95 was the better car, once we got it sorted out. But he just had to have the arrest-me-red 97. What a POS. Had to put an engine in it. Had to do a right rear knuckle in it too. They are not cheap even used. Parts for the Mitsu were more expensive than for our MBs. And of course there were less parts suppliers. I'd say the 92 should be ok if you know the car's history. Still, they are expensive and a 17 year, throughly thrashed car (it is, admit it) is gonna need work and maybe a motor down the line. As long as you have the budget and time to work on it, go for it. Have fun, but be careful, they can be scary fast.
Oh, and if it seems to overheat even though everything checks out, replace the water pump. The 95 had that problem and it turned out the (plastic)impeller had come lose from the shaft. Everything seemed to be turning fine from the outside. Had to take the timing belt end of the motor apart to even diagnose the problem. Bizarre. (no, just cheap rice burning engineering).
Neons may not be great cars for a frontal impact, but I have watched them race at Mid-Ohio for years and was always impressed with the way they took a beating and kept going. The class they were in looked (and raced) like a Nascar farm team. Stewards were always yelling at those guys for too much contact. They were a blast to watch and don't recall any really serious injuries in them at MO.

Well....To have exactly the same motor, so you would have the upper hand from a dig.

Yeah, i know my neon inside and out... I also talked to the person who brought it in from California who my girlfriend knows. He's a few owners ago, i car faxed it, it's changed hands 8 times since 06. He said to run away from that car... Didnt share any more info, but he just said to run away from that GD POS...

Thinking if it's traded hands THAT many times, there's something lurking that I'm not being told about...
