AMG Hammer, $57,500.00, worth the money?

Nice car, but no way in H!LL I'd pay 57k for it. I'd rather have a 94 or 95 E500

Not worth $57,000 in my eyes. But if he or she sells it for that price. Then it is worth that much. Personally I wouldnt pay more then $30,000 for it.

Wait till iwrock sees this one.

One problem with cars like this, with mileage so low, every mile driven decreases its value. So would you drive it or store it?

I have heard that these things have a claimed speed of 202 mph, and having gotten a ride in one of these that Barry Taylor had www.richmondmercedes.com about about 6 years ago, at a first glance they "look" like any 300E till you start them. Then they sound like a 427 Corvette, and can blow off a 500E and lots of other things, with no trouble at all.

I think the AMG 6.0 Hammer is the utimate E class of all time.

The DOHC engine isn't quite reliable as the SOHC but this vehicle here, is probably the only car I would ever trade off my AMG coupe for.

Why? It has the old style Mercedes Benz build quality, durability, and reliability, and fit and finish; at just 19k its whole life is ahead of it; BHMA was indeed an authorized AMG outlet back in '87, and its provenance is guaranteed, it even still has the original BHMA license plate frame on it, and probably has no rust and collision issues, as a lightly used lifetime So Cal car.

For people with $57k handy, it's definately worth it.

(But my money tree in the back yard has already shed all its leaves for the winter. Drat.)

I would buy it in a heartbeat and immediately start driving the tar out of it.

After I'd gotten it, and put a new set of Euro lights and wipers on it, and a Mercedes Benz fire exinguisher, too, I would stash the US headlight wipers and headlights in the garage, and then set out hunting M series BMWs to spank. (There is no shortage of those.)

Engine compartment looks like a flood car and the rugs look like crap. Why in the heck can't these wheeler dealers at least clean up and detail a car properly before asking top dollar for the thing,,,, geeeezzzz.:(

Matt SD300 02-07-2009 05:53 PM

It just dont float my boat.......... And the price is stupid...........

diametricalbenz 02-07-2009 05:57 PM

Way overpriced. You could get a 6.3 or even 600 for that money with much more collector value.

I saw this one a few days ago and thought the guy was crazy!

This is the third run on ebay, and most of the time it settles in at about $40k - not hitting the reserve. For $40k, it's worth it because you probably won't lose any money at it, but it's so "collector" that you can't do too much with it. $57k? Seems a bit high, but a car like that is worth what someone is willing to pay.

He's either uninformed or ignorant about the a/c refrigerant.

He says he had it converted to R12, but it came with R12.

He either meant to say he converted it to r134a or had it redone with R12.

What's with the chrome wheels, too? I can't believe that AMG would've prepared the car that way.

Hatterasguy 02-07-2009 09:47 PM

I like it, I'd say its probably worth mid 30's, but really its whatever a buyer is willing to pay.

I'd buy something like this over a 500E because its more rare. Not that 500E's are commen but they made enough of them, drive something like this to a MB meet and you will have the only one.

TheDon 02-07-2009 09:48 PM

One please

Jorn 02-07-2009 09:56 PM

How many of those were made anyway?

Hatterasguy 02-07-2009 10:25 PM

Well it was a custom car back than, since AMG was still an independent tunner...so its probably a one off...or maybe at most has a twin.

some magazine comments on the '87 AMG Hammer

Car and Driver - "The Hammer covers ground so quickly that you swear you can feel the earth's curvature racing to meet you. Yet...this AMG-modified sedan keeps you completely at ease as you pierce the atmosphere like a horizontal bolt of lightning. All that's lacking is the stench of scorched sulphur from the shocked aftermath of your receding thunder...For all its power, the Hammer applies its blows superbly...The chassis absorbs the road's upsets with none of its own...The driver's job is to hew to the one true line and to look way ahead, because that's where the car will be in a flash..."

Auto Gallery - "The Hammer is a marvellous amalgam of traditional Mercedes-Benz values and jaw-clenching performance...Its urban road manners are impeccable...At the limit, almost 100 yards of road are covered every second, and the meaning of tunnel vision becomes all too obvious...Caveats aside, the Hammer is beautifully designed to provide the skilled driver with an experience virtually unequalled by any production car..."

Car: (LJK Setright) You are admittedly driving a four-door saloon, not a sports car; but what liberated it from that crowd was not its original suave six-cylinder engine. this one is a 5.6litre V8, with four camshafts, 32valves, 360bhp, and price tag which makes these or any other numbers appear trivial. What is not at all trivial is the car's ability to sprint from 60 to 120mph in 10seconds flat: a 911 Carrera would take 20seconds, a Countach at least 12, and even a good motorcycle could need eight. The thought that a current F1 grand prix turbocar passes from 60 to 120 in about three seconds may restore a sense of proportion; but if you had had a sense of proportion you would not have bought a car like this in the first place.

My understanding is that AMG built ten '87 Hammer sedans. Two were RHD for England and one of them was junked some years ago.
