Do you live in Homophily?
I do.
"Americans like to live in diverse communities. At least, that's what they say. About two in three Americans say they prefer to live around people belonging to different races, religions and income groups. In reality, however, survey research shows that people are increasingly clustering together among those who are just like themselves, especially on the one attribute that ties the others together -- political affiliation. Nearly half of all Americans live in "landslide counties" where Democrats or Republicans regularly win in a rout. In the 2008 election, 48 percent of the votes for president were cast in counties where President-elect Barack Obama or Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won by more than 20 percentage points, according to the Pew Research Center. The clustering of Democrats in Democratic areas and Republicans in Republican areas has been intensifying for at least three decades: In 1976, only about a quarter of all Americans lived in landslide counties. In 1992, a little more than a third of America was landslide country. . . http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/18/AR2009011802323_pf.html It's odd because I didn't move to me current home thinking I wanted to live in Homophily. It was other things that took me there; the ability to walk to stores, the library, the movie theater and bookshops. Why did I end up with politically similar neighbors?

Counties are gerrymandered this way. Dems and Reps have colluded to limit the amount of seats up for grabs. It keeps power between the two, and is cheaper campaigning-wise to contest fewer HOR seats.

Yep. As a result most of them can safely ignore the other party, resulting in an increasingly polarized and unconcerned Congress. Yet another reason to vote the bastards out.

I thought it was congressional districts and not counties that were gerrymandered??

Yeah. I read counties so it replaced the right word in my head. However, the article describes counties where Reps or Dems regularly win in a rout. So maybe I'm not the only one who got it wrong.
Regardless, the statistic is not a reflection of people seeking like minds. You'd have to poll your neighbors's positions before buying a house, and who does that?

That's why I found the article so interesting. People don't do that consciously, yet it happens. Why?

Since the dems literally control Maryland, after the last census they took the opportunity to create a district that includes part of the Eastern Shore, over the top of the Bay, and then down a little spine to include the house of a popular republican.

People choose their neighborhoods on income level, location, resale values, school system, etc.. The housing market has changed, income disparity has grown, neighborhoods have less variety in price of homes, HOA mentality, and I'm sure many other factors that have led to people of differing minds to either choose or be forced to choose to live in different neighborhoods.
