That's a big difference, isn't it? One place is in the middle of nowhere. The other place is a city of 15 million or so.

If it occurs underneath the ocean, isn't it likely to cause a tsunami? That would certainly be bad news for people living in the path of it.

It may or may not. AFAIK most ocean earthquakes don't trigger a tsunami.

Not when you include all the surrounding towns and suburbs. Sulawesi is a big island with low-density population. Sometimes it helps to have lived there.

Do you think it's because the water above the quake absorbs alot of the shock vs. earthquakes above water?
